Could any of you delightful Canadians inform me on the origins of the name? Also are your works closed and such?

I was out driving to some of these stores around 9am and there wasn't that much traffic out there. Plenty of WM parking spaces.

Boxing Day is our Black Friday. It's a huge shopping day.

I notice there was an article on Yahoo saying this is becoming the case in the US too. They are calling today "the new Black Friday". That only works occasionally, of course. I expect "Boxing Day" will ultimately catch on down there too.

There are all sorts of genesis stories. First, it obviously comes via Britain for us.

I've heard the following:

A box of staples was given by Lords to the serfs.

Employers gave their servants a gift box on the day after Xmas, and reversed roles serving the servants a meal.

Stores would have big sales on the seasonal products rather than box them up and store them for the next year.

And yes, Boxing Day rules. After the huge 2-month buildup to Christmas, Boxing Day is a nice wind-down day, where you can relax at home, or go visit family and friends.

Going back to work on the 26th in bonkers. But of course, I chose to do it because I made double-time-and-a-half to sit around an empty airport for 8 hours.

Yes, Happy Belated Boxing Day!

I've heard the origin of Boxing Day is indeed from Britain. The Lords would have the servants box up the things the Lords no longer need (on Christmas), and give the boxes to the servants. They would then give them the 26th off to do as they wish.
