Default Let's Play Pretend!

So, 99.9% of you people pretend to be film experts, I read stuff like "GRAIN IS GREAT!", "OAR ONLY!", "RESPECT THE DIRECTOR'S VISION!", etc.

Now, let's say that a new Director makes a low budget film with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Because of his budget he has to use cheaper film stock that causes more grain than he wants. He also plans on cropping the image to 1.77:1.
Now that film is picked up to be distributed by a major studio. The studio wants to release it as 1.85:1 but will use DNR with Director's approval.

How would you want it released?

See that bolded part. As long as that is fully represented, that's the way I want it. And you would actually be surprised that scenario you came probably happens more than we would expect.

No, it's clarification.
So, DNR is fine with Director's approval. What about the aspect ratio that he/she wanted?

Depends on the subject matter and the amount of applied DNR used.

Make it plastic? No!
Clean it up to be somewhat presentable? Absolutely!

Grain has it's place. On a static solid color background isn't one of them!

I already answered this question with my first post...once again...see the bolded part, as long as THAT is represented, that's the way I want it and anyone who would consider themselves a "movie buff", "film expert" or "passing novice" should not have a problem with any Blu-ray that represents what the director envisioned for his/her film. So this should answer all your questions about your topic.

I'm a director's-say guy all the way.

Execpt when it comes to re-tooling the Star Wars trilogy every 4 years.

That's what happened with Star Trek 6 - the movie was released in theaters in a matted 2:35 ratio, but director Nicholas Meyer had the mattes removed and released on DVD in 1:85. I'm fine with it since it's what he wanted, and it doesn't hurt the experience of watching the film since nothing is cropped off.

The director owns the movie so it's his right do what he wants.

Not to say the director is always going to make the smartest decision =P.
