I would definately go with HAL as well. Having seen 2001 many times, but just recently watched it alone for the first time. Watching it alone is like watching a completely different movie. It's so scary by yourself, and so much more claustrophobic.

When I saw the title of the tread I thought about the computer that the scientist builds that takes over the house and impregnates his wife.... Couldn't remember the name but I think The Simpsons did a parody of it...

Some good entries in the list of Hal's Pals, but really, what happened to Hal himself? He should most definitely be on the list as #1 or #2 or #3.

I think they consider HAL to be in a class by himself so that is why he is not on the countdown.

I think HAL is pretty much in a class apart. In reality HAL was not evil, he had a conflict of interest in his program. What made him so chilling was his matter of fact way to saying what we felt as humans was evil but was for him just part of his programing. He was logical in his method. 2001 was nothing more then a classic lack of communication between machine and humans.The cold matter of fact logical brain of the computer vs the intelligent emotional brain of a human. In a way HAL is a tragic heroe compare to the other machines on this list.

Very well put, but he did kill 4 people in cold blood and tried to kill another. I think that qualifies as "evil."

I've always liked the theory that "Sentient supercomputers who turn upon their creators and try to take over the world" disappeared from our pop-culture movies largely around 1984--
Right about the same time the Mac appeared.
