Default My PS3 decided to stop playing movies...

Well my PS3 just died. I was watching Iron Man and halfway through the movie it started freezing and skipping. After many attempts to replay the movie (or any movie for that matter), I came to the sad realization that the PS3 is broken.

I just filled out the online form for Sony to fix it. Unfortunately I bought it used and it lasted about 7 months, but I have no receipt so therefore no warranty. However, I couldn't put in the online order that I had no receipt. Does anyone know if they will still fix it and just charge the $150? I'm assuming that's the case.

What bums me out is that there was no warning signs that something was going wrong. It played movies fine, with no issues, all the way up to today. Then out of nowhere it just stops. It's going to be a LONG 2 weeks.

In case anyone cares it's a 40gb CECHG01 model.

I'm not sure, but isn't there a reset button on the back? If not, did you try unplugging it from the outlet for a little while, then plugging it back in (this might reset it). Good luck.

Yeah, I tried unplugging everything, resetting it, setting the unit vertical (instead of horizontal), pretty much whatever I could. Still nothing. Sometimes it won't even detect that a disc is in there, other times it just won't load and gives me error codes. I'm pretty sure its done for.

Default PS3 Fix

I had the same thing happen to me a while back playing movie in the ps3. Called up Sony and they told me I had to send it in for repair. Miraculously my ps3 fixed itself after I spent a couple days shutting off the power from the back and restarting. That was the last time I played a movie in it, and I will never put another movie in it again. I got a free packing box from Sony though out of it in case the ps3 ever goes out on me. I bought a stand alone player for movies, ps3 will be strictly a gaming machine for me.

To the OP did you buy your ps3 on a credit card? Sony isn't too anal about the receipt and if you can find a statement, even an e-statment of the credit card you bought it from, they'll even take that as proof of purchase...i know cause the same thing happend to me.....well good luck...

Well I bought it used on ebay, I have a paypal receipt but I doubt that will work. I contacted the seller in hopes that he may have the original receipt but I'm not holding my breath. I'll probably just end up paying the $150 to get it fixed.

I'm already going through withdrawals though .

First, as previous post, unplug it for about 30 minutes and see if it wasn't a heating issue or some one time thing.

Second, can you ejected the disc? Can you play DVD's? Can you play other Blurays?

I C....yeah you would need the original purchaser's receipt in that case and hope that sony's one year warranty hasn't expired....you should try the last resort...restore the ps3 that other posters have mentioned....other than that good luck....

Ok, I had it unplugged for about 2 hours while I went out. Right now its playing a Blu-ray (Into the Wild), which it wouldn't play yesterday. I'm just waiting for it to freeze though, I'm extremely nervous and just praying it's ok.

It seemed to play dvd's ok (I only tried one though), but I tried multiple blu-rays yesterday (Iron Man, Hulk, Kung Fu Panda, Wall•E, etc) and each one either froze or wouldn't even load or be recognized by the PS3.

Here's hoping it was just an issue yesterday

Same thing happen to my 60gb launch model. Is there an error code when you put a bluray disc in? The 60gb model has a faulty laser which allows it to play dvd/cd/ps2 disc, however, it begins to fail at reading any blu-ray source (i.e ps3 games and bluray movies). It is unfortunate, but you can get sony to replace the laser for you, but your out a ps3 for a month and $150. Another option is to order a laser off ebay and fix it yourself. I ended up selling my ps3 on craigslist for very cheap and someone bought it and decided to fix it himself. I ended up buying the 160gb bundle recently. Hopefully that helps, good luck.

Best News Ever!

So I sent in my PS3 to get fixed. When I filled out the online request I put the date being less than a year (since I contacted the guy I purchased it from told me when he originally bought it). He was going to try and find the receipt for me but wasn't able to. Long story short, I sent in the PS3 with no reciept assuming I would be contacted for payment.

They recieved my PS3 on monday, and I just got my shipping notification today that they're sending one back out to me .

Unfortunately I think it's a different system so my Rock Band 2 saves won't transfer, but for free I'm not going to complain .

Thanks everyone for your help before. I am thrilled right now and just wanted to share my awesome news.
