Default Well my PS3 died tonight.

My PS3 40 gig officially died tonight and i have had it for about 2 years which obviously means no warranty. It just simply will no longer read or play blu rays, games or dvd's. So i am assuming the laser eye has passed on to a better place. i guess this puts me buying a new slim design ps3. I hope this thing is better in some way . . . .

Oh and i tried the 3 hour long reformatting and returning to default settings etc and no luck . . .

If you don't game on it..... get a standalone. If you do game on it.... don't totally dismiss the idea of sending it in for repair for $150. The slims haven't been out very long yet, so there's no way of knowing if they are more or less reliable than the originals.

Sorry to here that but if you are brave enough you might want to check out Marine Mike tips
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=35895

He explains what you will need to do if you want to fix yourself..

Good luck

I have a 40gb PS3 and the same thing happened to me last month, system was 16months old. I suggest you buy a new laser, which is probably the single lens KES-400A model. They sell them at a site called psxboy.com for about $70. I replaced my laser with the help of a few youtube tutorial videos and after that the freezing stopped and all was well. DON"T SEND TO SONY FOR REPAIR!!
But if I was you, after installing the new laser, I would look into selling your system before it starts to overheat and blow out another laser within a year. Selling and buying the more efficient slim would be your best option.
Hope this helps. Peace

Yes I have had my dealings with the PS3 and have been well trained by the infamous MarineMike to fix most PS3 problems myself. I think it's a waste of money to pay sony $150 for a problem that they caused when it's just as easy to fix yourself.

I think thats the one reason they made those things more or less like a plug-n-play. Ive had mine a littleover 6 months and it still workin like a horse.

Yes unless you can do it yourself. Or you can use MarineMike's helpful guides thread but if you don't feel like risking it then yes send it to Sony. And as mentioned you can also buy a new laser. But yeah I remember when my PS3 died I was like:

Yeah, both of mine died under warranty, then one died again, and isn't covered.... I gave it to my wife's little brother.... he's gonna try to fix it I guess.... I just don't want to deal with it.

If you play games, then the slim is an option.... but the regular ones dropped in price too at least...... you could just get another one

I am getting a stand-alone though, but then again, I don't have any games, so it's up to you

Make sure its a standalone, because they are cooler running, and much more energy efficent.
I'm looking at the Oppo. By all accounts it's a very solid player.
