One of my consoles died tonight and it's not the one by Sony - Blu-ray Forum

I was an original Xbox owner and mine still works so I was willing to give M$ the benefit of the doubt despite all these 30% failure rate stories but I guess the stories were true.

I had just sat down tonight to finally play Ace Combat 6 (I was holding out for a PS3 version) when it tells me to do an update. Right after that it does this horrid-sounding impersonation of an F-22 Raptor trying to shove its nose up another jet's exhaust pipe and promptly spits my game back out. After that it staunchly refused to retract the disc drawer no matter what I did - it just sat there with the disc tray out like it was sticking its tongue out at me.....grrrr.

Only good news is I had it on a Best Buy replacement plan so in a few weeks I should get back a gift card worth my original purchase price. Now I have to decide if I want to take the risk and buy an Elite with it.

Sorry, I know this is a Blu-ray forum but I just needed to rant.

For some reason I haven't had much luck with consoles this generation. I still have a PSone, my Dreamcast, original Xbox, and my fat PS2 but my first PS3 got replaced within 2 weeks of launch and now my 360 packed up.

Me no happy

Maybe it's time to break out the burnt offerings and incense for the game gods.

Because MS took major short cuts to beat Sony to the market. It's definitely paid off having a year head start in terms of market share and developer support.

Use your money on something else. I had 2 xbox's break on me microsoft is never getting another penny from me. My friend who's a manager at gamestop had 5 of his 360's break on him so he got a ps3.

We have 150, 360's unit's 75 of which were first generation with a death rate of over 60% in the first year. MS the mother (insert last word yourself) refused to repair under warranty because they are rented out.
We have had no second generation 360's back yet! (touch wood).
On the other hand we have had no PS-3's die of their own accord.
Sony Aus charge a standard $395.00, yes that's right $395.00 for "any" non warranty repair even if it's just a missing lid, which put's the company itself in the same catagory as MS as far as I'm concerned

I held off a while and got the elite, which supposedly has a much lower mortaity rate, and have yet to have it die on me. My co-worker had a standard one and had it go 4 times, 2 right after plugging it in after a warranty repair. He had a fit and got some free games.

why do people by elites? I just can't understand this. How much elites are going for, isn't it like 50 bucks short of PS3?

I'm looking at an elite just to get a wider library of games. The PS3 is behind on getting good games to the system, the games that I enjoy are still coming later in the year, and I'm getting bored playing old PS2 and PS1 games. It's more to be able to do something other then watching movies on my game system.

huh? but what is the point? you can just get a regular 360 and save few bucks for a game. IMO elite is a ripoff. It's like MS figured if 360's are breaking than why not sell a higher priced model and say it doesn't break often lol...

If it weren't for Ace Combat 6, Dead or Alive, or Halo 3 I wouldn't even consider getting another Xbox.

I can do without the latter two but I'm a huge air/space combat fan and Ace Combat is my fix now that PC flight games have gone down the tubes.

Why oh why did Namco Bandai have to put AC6 on the 360?!?

On the subject of the Elite model, I've heard even those have a 10% failure rate (at best!) according to an MS insider since supposedly the basic console design is intolerant to faults and it's not just crappy parts or lack of heat capacity causing the failures.

I'm not sure at this point what I'll do when I get that gift card back.

Maybe I should just get a Wii and wait for HAWX on the PS3 and Innocent Aces on the WiiWii...

I bought the elite so hopefully it wouldn't fry, and it hasn't. I bought the Xbox because I was way more interested in their games vs. the PS3. Savvy?

hdmi, larger hard drive, and 2 free games in the current bundle that. It's 100$ more then the standard system, and I would end up upgrading the smaller hard drive anyway, and the hard drive I'm sure since it's MS propietary costs a good bit more then 100$.

What games are those? HDMI on xbox is pretty much useless, larger HDD is good but xbox should ship with at least 40 gig from the get-go. I have 360 20gig version and I see no purpose in elite besides having funbois spit out more money in MS's way..

I bought a 360 for my brother-in-law to play when he came over.... it was in a separate room, with it's own t.v.

It had about 15 hours of play time on it in approximately a year and a half, and died..... I sent it back, got it back fixed, and sold it on craigslist (to justify to the wife the need to get a PS3)

My wife had pushed back on me getting a blu-ray player for a LONG time.... because she knew the movies were more expensive.... (and she knew my movie buying addiction) she didn't know the PS3 played blu-rays.... that's the main reason I got the PS3... really it was "something that her brother could play when he visited" haha!!! Sometimes the good-guys win!!! The day I got the PS3, I got approximately 30 movies with it..... she was none-to-happy with me! I now have two PS3's, and ONE game!!!!! Her brother loves to come over to play COD4 none-the-less!

Why is HDMI useless on a 360? It displays fine on my 1080p tv. We get it, your a Xbox hater. No one can say anything to make you like one, so why bother talking about it? Although, anyone with Faith No More lyrics in their sig cant be all that bad. :P

I had a 360 that was purchased shortly after launch that lasted almost two years. Then I started getting the red rings, so I used my Best Buy replacement plan to upgrade to the Elite. I actually got the RROD once after only a couple of weeks with the Elite, but that was last July and I haven't seen it since.

To the previous poster . . . I wanted the Elite because it's black. Plus the ease of use with HDMI is a bonus.

Just wondering, how long did it take in your case for Best Buy to send you the gift card after you first called them? They told me it'd be about 5-7 days for the mailing label to get here but gave me no idea about how long it'd take after I ship out the unit to get the card back.
