Question All Sony components! Set-up issue with cable/receiver/audio

Hi all. New to the site. Appreciate your advice.

I have all Sony equipment except a HD cable box/DVR from Comcast, a 40" Bravia LCD, BDP S550 and HT-SF2300, which are all connected with HDMI cables. I seem to be having noise on the left hand side of the screen while playing BD only (that is, there is no problem at all with regular DVDs). It goes from barely noticeable to somewhat distracting depending on the image/background that is displayed. It also seems to come and go depending on the day-we watched Road Warrior and Night at the Museum a couple days ago and didn't notice it at all. Tonight though it was back on every BD I tried. I even returned the Dark Knight when I first noticed the problem as I thought it was the disc. When I played the new one I exchanged it for it was fine. I've checked the connections which seem to be fine. Could it be a bad cable? Seems unusual since regular DVDs are not effected.

Thanks again for any advice or suggestions.

try connecting your player directly to the TV, this will tell you if its the receiver causing the issue.

what is the TV model #?

...try turning off 1080p/24 Hz.

That is a feature that may affect Bluray playback.

The TV is a Sony KDL-40S4100. I assume that turning off 1080p/24 Hz is done in TV settings? Will that affect quality at all? Thanks again for your suggestions.

Wow! Yeah Crack I got that regarding the player settings and I turned off 1080p/24 Hz and the noise is completely gone!! So that's great. Only concern is that the TV specs indicate it is compatible with 1080p and now I won't be getting the highest quality picture. Am I wrong about that? Shouldn't I be getting the 1080p picture on BD? Thanks.

Edit: After reading a thread on this forum which says the following:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t=1080i+1080p:

"When it comes to movies (as in HD DVD and Blu-ray) there will be no visible difference between the 1080i signal and the 1080p signal, as long as your TV correctly de-interlaces 1080i. So even if you could input 1080p, you wouldn't see a difference (because there is none)."

I feel somewhat relieved. Do you agree there is no difference in quality by turning off 1080p/24 Hz?

Firstly, I don't. There are additional motion jaggies in an interlaced source, deinterlaced or not.

But you don't need to worry... turning off 1080p/24 only removes the 24hz playback. You're still getting a 1080p picture ^^

Ok cool UFA thanks for the info. Hendrix at Woodstock sounds and looks great without that fracking noise.

your tv specs say its compatible with 1080p/24hz, but what this means is that it can accept 1080p/24hz but applies its own pull down to convert 24hz into 60hz. Turning this feature off (as mentioned) only turns off the 24hz. You should still be getting 1080p.

Well I'm back with my next challenge with regard to my setup (see above). My BDs play great and sound great but I don't have sound through my 5.1 speakers when I'm watching cable. When I first did my connections, I had the cable box connected to the receiver. For unknown reasons, I was getting a very brief cable TV picture and sound and then a blank screen/no sound. I then connected the cable box directly to the TV, which solved the problem except I don't have the option of sound through the 5.1 speakers since I don't have the cable box connected to the receiver.
Anybody have a clue as to why my cable wasn't working properly when connected to the receiver? Thanks for your help here as always.
