Exclamation PS3 Games / COD4 HD Resolution Issues / HELP?

Here is my dilemma. I am using a Sony XBR5, Onkyo 606, and a PS3 connected using the same type of HDMI cables back and forth. I have the latest firmware on the XBR5, and the PS3. When I play COD4, the game is perfect, my issue is with the resolution settings. If I leave the PS3 with all the resolution options enabled, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, the game, in either single player, or multiplayer plays in 720p. If I go to the display settings and manually select the output resolutions, and turn off 720p, 1080i, and reload the game, the game plays at 1080p, I know this by pressing the info button on the XBR, and the TV displays the current output resolution. On the GOTY COD4 packaging the Supported HD video output label shows 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. What I don't understand is why doesn’t the game play at 1080p all the time, when I manually set the resolution to go to the 1080p mode, the picture is MUCH MUCH better, notably better. Is there something wrong with the game, the way it’s encoded, the PS3, my settings? Oye vey everybody! I don’t mind going and setting the resolution settings for the best output, but it’s starting to be a pain in the butt. For example when I set the settings manually and shut 720p and 1080i off, my Killzone 2 demo plays at 480p, I then have to go back and let the PS3 auto select the video options again. I am guessing the PS3 is up converting the COD4 video, but if that is the case why does the video look 10 times better, and why doesn’t it do that on all games like up convert the Killzone 2 to 1080p. Suggestions?

Because 720p is the game's native(and suggested) resolution. The game will run smoothest at its native resolution. If your TV is 1080p native then thats all your TV can display anyway, It will just accept a 480p, 720p, or 1080i and upscale it to fit the TV's native resolution. It can be a pain to go and check and uncheck the resolution boxes, but with all of them checked the game will always run at its native res. You will have to uncheck to force it to upscale
