Default Onkyo 806 keeps shutting off

So i got my onkyo 806 and i got it all setup and i started turning the volume up and it just shut off.

I unplugged everything except the two front speakers, polk monitor 70's and it still does it, got up to about -18 on the volume and it just shuts off and blinks on stand by

edit: ohm rating is set correctly, as was the bi-amp feature when i had them setup like that at first, now i have it set off and just the fronts hooked up and running, no bells and whistles

i just got it today

would having lower then needed guage wire cause this, im using the wire from my z-5500's which is probably smaller then 16 guage, but i didnt have any issues with my old sony es reciever

edit2: nvm it did it again

edit3: something seems off, it doesnt sound as good or is as loud as my 15 yr old sony reciever

edit4: its hooked up to the surge only side of my ups, that wouldnt be it would it? could it be drawing to much power through it? i mean i do have my computer, tv, blu ray and a few other things hooked to it

oooh ohhh ohh pick me pick me...ok
This happened to me when I first hooked up my monitor 70s, but with my current reciever. I checked everything, wire connection, the binding posts, and everything seemed fine. However...if your back to a non-bi-amped connection, make sure your connection plate is nice and secure to the top binding posts. Mine was connected, but it was more like shorting out. Took it and made sure it was nice and tight and it worked out nicely. And it only has to be one speaker to get your 806 to turn off.

nope no dice

it was happening when it was bi-amp'd and i switched back to normal cause i wanted to see if it still did it with the absolute minium amount of wires connected

It is probably shutting off because it is seeing too much resistance. This can be caused by wires touching where they aren't supposed to (usually the case) or it can be caused by a few other things. Banana plugs help a great deal since they keep all the wires separated when things get cramped behind the reciever. However, since you only have your front speakers plugged in, it might be something else.

Make sure you DO NOT use those binding posts on your speakers when in bi-amp mode. If you are in regular mode, use the binding posts. In any case, set the resistance to 6 ohms or higher on the reciever and if all that doesn't work then you might have a defective unit

Where did you get it from?

hmm unless its a heat thing its kinda working so far this morning.

only thing i checked were the connections on the speakers, they didnt appear to be loose but i reseated them anyways

would it shut the amp off if the speaker wire wasnt making good contact and would be arcing?

also i went into my settings and told it i just have 2 speakers for now, and it clicked on "stereo" (i heard something click inside)

would it shut off if i had it set to drive 5 speakers but only 2 were attached?

why did i hear something click when i dropped down to just 2 speakers?

why wouldnt i use the binding posts when in bi-amp mode? i removed the bridges.

got it from ecost

again the speaker wire im using is from my old logitech z-5500's, not sure what guage it is, its small, probably less then 16 guage, also at the ends its got some sort of hard coat on it making it hard to get it to stay in there

but it seems to be working fine in 2 channel mode, so either something is messed with surround sound, or i just got the wires seated well enough

edit2: just listened to money for nothing at +0.0 and i had to cover my ears in my bedroom lol. didnt shut off though

I would remove all speaker connections and verify that you can turn volume up and not have the issue.

Then I would try different sets of speakers and wires...to see if there is anything in common.

so it was fine running in 2 channel stereo mode, but as soon as i hooked the center up and turn it on in the speaker settings it turned off again

edit: front and rears are running fine, center is hooked up but disabled in the settings

so it almost seems to be a problem specific to the center?

edit2: but it does it even with the center channel active but nothing hooked up, then it would be the onkyo?

you know you can hook up any speaker to any channel! take one of your other two speakers L or R and connect it to the center channel and see if you have the same problem. do the same with your center channel and connect it to where you removed the other speaker. if you have the same problem with the center channel after doing that then your receiver is most likley bad. if you have the problem with just your 2 channel stereo (with the center channel connected to either L or R) then your center channel speaker is bad. give that a whirl and let me know. also, have you disconnected all cables fromt the receiver and cranked the volume up, if so, does it turn off?

Yeah, sorry. I meant the bridges You have to use the binding posts, not sure why I wrote that.

Sounds like you have isolated the problem to the center channel? Try hooking up your center speaker to either the L or R output, see if it cuts off then.

Do you have any other speaker wire? Are you using the same two pieces for all your tests? There may be a short there somewhere.

Any Dice Blindsay? You could try some different speaker gauge wire from radioshack. That's prob one of the cheapest places to get speaker wire that isn't from an Online store like Monoprice.

disconnect all your speakers.

If the receiver still turns off, you've got a defective receiver.

If it stays on, then either your wiring is bad or one of the speakers is bad.

Not to mention, did you get a "recertified" from eCost?

yeah its a recert from ecost

edit: BINGO, with NO speakers hooked up at all it just shuts off when the center channel is enabled, so the problem seems to be the reciever and the center channel specifically

edit2: the whole thing has left a bitter tast in my mouth, with onkyo (we will see how ecost handles this) but onkyo was the one who recertified this so u think they would have tested it, especially something like the center channel.

and two, im pissed it said it had BTL capability and i find out the 806 doesnt so false advertising there, considering they know about the mistake on their site and have yet to fix it while people like me buy that reciever expecting that feature......

double check the center channel connection on the receiver, ensure there is no strand of copper from perhaps a previous owners wiring that is caught inside, touching something it shouldn't.

If you don't see anything out of the ordinary, then its just defective.

don't let that potentially turn you off from onkyo. you just happened to get a bad on, it happens forrest, now go get another one. i love mine and if it went bad today (mind you i've had it for a year or so) I'd buy another onkyo in a heart beat! best of luck to ya!
