Default Suggestions for dedicated CD/SACD players?

I know that my 60GB-PS3 plays CD and SACD, but I would prefer to only use my PS3 for movies and gaming. As such, I'm in the market for a moderate-to-higher end CD/SACD player. Please, no $2,000 recommendations as that is not in my budget!

I'm fairly flexible on price (between $500-$1000), but NO MORE!

And if you could provide links, that would be most appreciated!

You could do worse than to get one of Oppo's offerings. I think they're at www.oppodigital.com.

I had an Arcam back in the day, but I sold it years ago. Thanks for the reminder, I'll check out their site. I also know a few dealers around town that carry it.

I've heard of them, but am not really familiar with them. So I tend to shy away from companies like that. If anyone has any reviews to share on their products, I would certainly be open to looking at them.

I would recommend one of the Denon universal dvd players like the 3910 or 3930. They play cds, dvds, dvd-audios, and sacds. Sound quality is very good for a universal player and some are in your price range. The higher end Sony SACD players are another option to check out.

with that price point i can go with the oppos.

great 'universal' player, (nope, no hd-dvd nor blu-ray, thus the quote), playin both sacd and dvd-audio, and has a fantastic sound to em.

find more details at...

www.oppodigital.com

forgot to mention - price range around 200 clams upwards.

I'd recommend the Oppo as well, particularly the 980H.

It supports HDMI 1.2 so that it can send DSD natively across HDMI and also supports DVD-Audio.

If you'd like to read up a little more -

Best part? It's only $169.

Yep, the 980h is what I use for SACD/DVD-A. Nothing like seeing the DSD display come on on my receiver when I play SACD's

I would recommend checking out the Yamaha DVD-S2700. It's Yamaha's top single disc universal player, and it handles SACDs, CDs, and DVD-Audio discs very well. It will also bitstream DSD over HDMI to your receiver. Since it's a universal player, it also has DVD playback with 1080p upscaling over HDMI. Don't let the fact it has DVD playback scare you off though, because it has excellent audio performance.

I have the Yamaha DVD-S2500, which was just replaced with the 2700, and it is a fantastic SACD player. Being able to accept DVD-Audio discs, as well as regular DVDs, is an added bonus. The big difference between the 2500 and 2700 is DVD upscaling to 1080p versus 1080i in mine.

Here's a link to the 2700:

So how good is this Oppo 980h, compared to say the marantz, parasound d200, or a nad 585 or 535? The Oppo is considerably cheaper and has dsd, but I'm wondering how good the analog outs are and how the sound quality is compared to more expensive universal players and dedicated cd/sacd players. I know the sacd output is good on the oppos, but what about just regular cd as well?

Dan Wright has the gift and, in review comparisons, his modified Sony's and Denon's routinely toast other players costing a whole lot more money.

Arcam 73 just got marked down to $599. Great player. Very rich-sounding, great separation, awesome detail, and more natural overall. I've tried other players in the $1000-$2000 price range and this one beat them all-even the Rega Saturn. Got mine for $350 on audiogon. I'm using Grado RS-1 headphones and Darkvoice 332 headphone amp with mullard m8100 and the ukranian tubes everyone says are the best ones on head-fi

If you want a standard redbook CD player, then I think the Rotel RCD-1072 can't be beat.

Marantz is another option for CD/SACD. The SA-8001 should be pretty cheap since the SA-8003 is the latest model.

I picked up my second Oppo last month - the 980H and it's fantastic. For $169 you CAN'T go wrong. I'm using it strictly for cd/sacd/dvd-a playback - no monitor connected as it's in my music room.
