Make sure you're in a game or Blu-ray with surround sound when you try it. When you're just in the system menus, it plays audio as just PCM stereo.
And yes, optical can not carry surround sound in PCM. HDMI is required for that. You need to use Dolby Digital or DTS for surround sound in optical. Make sure those codecs are turned on in your PS3 configuration. |

I haven't quite understood your earlier post. Have you been able to get surround sound through your Z680 already or not? It should be able to play 5.1 surround in Double Digital or DTS mode. |

The only way your going to get 5.1 pcm/dolby truehd/dts ma on your ps3 is by hdmi cable. The receiver only needs to support pcm. You will only get 2.1 pcm by optical. So as long as you use optical you will not get 5.1 or 7.1 hd audio.

That said, buying a different receiver to hook up to those speakers and playing HD codecs over it isn't going to actually sound any better than what you have now. Your cheap speakers are the biggest limiting factor in your existing system. The additional clarity in the source signal will be wasted. To get HD sound, you'll need a receiver with HDMI decoding ability (not just HDMI pass through) and a good set of speakers to go with it. Plug your PS3 into that, and then Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio will make themselves heard. |

A receiver provides the power for your speaker and it is a separate functional from your speakers. To get HD audio, you need new 5.1 speakers (not home-theater-in-a-box setup) and a new HDMI receiver. fuad |
