Are you using an optical cable? Optical only supports stereo PCM.

Make sure you're in a game or Blu-ray with surround sound when you try it. When you're just in the system menus, it plays audio as just PCM stereo.

And yes, optical can not carry surround sound in PCM. HDMI is required for that. You need to use Dolby Digital or DTS for surround sound in optical. Make sure those codecs are turned on in your PS3 configuration.

Optical can only support 2.1 PCM.

HDMI is the only thing that can support 5.1 PCM (Along with Multichannel analog, but PS3 cannot do that)

No. Optical can not carry 5.1 PCM no matter what you hook it up to. The link itself can not pass that much data.

I haven't quite understood your earlier post. Have you been able to get surround sound through your Z680 already or not? It should be able to play 5.1 surround in Double Digital or DTS mode.

set your ps3 to do bitstream as opposed to PCM. You won't get the HD sound but you will get 5.1 dts or dolby digital via the optical cable.

You need HDMI to get the full 5.1 PCM track from the PS3.

The only way your going to get 5.1 pcm/dolby truehd/dts ma on your ps3 is by hdmi cable. The receiver only needs to support pcm. You will only get 2.1 pcm by optical. So as long as you use optical you will not get 5.1 or 7.1 hd audio.

That's right.

That said, buying a different receiver to hook up to those speakers and playing HD codecs over it isn't going to actually sound any better than what you have now. Your cheap speakers are the biggest limiting factor in your existing system. The additional clarity in the source signal will be wasted.

To get HD sound, you'll need a receiver with HDMI decoding ability (not just HDMI pass through) and a good set of speakers to go with it. Plug your PS3 into that, and then Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio will make themselves heard.

You can't. Your sound system is a system with its own amplification (power) that gives you the sound. You cannot separate your control unit from your speakers.

A receiver provides the power for your speaker and it is a separate functional from your speakers. To get HD audio, you need new 5.1 speakers (not home-theater-in-a-box setup) and a new HDMI receiver.
