Default Black lines on HDTV's

Now this article tells us this http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/19...-bars-on-hdtvs
but I am wondering, is it bullshit? As my picture looks fine, I'm 100% certain its not stretched, and there are no black lines on screen. so is the article wrong, or have I got my tv setup wrong?

The article not wrong and you do not have your TV set up wrong. Personal preference is what it is about. I have the black lines because I like to see the picture the way it was filmed. You may have it zoomed in to fill the screen so you have cropped the picture. This does not matter in some films or TV, but imagine LOTR or Band of Brothers, with the big battles, and then you will be missing some action.

mines set to just scan, so it scans it exactly as its output. Just scan adds more detail that 4:3 or 16:9 gives, and i get no black bars. Clearly my setup is superior.

As long as your TV is set to display the image in the exact format of the signal that it receives, then you are watching seeing the image as it was meant to be seen. If you are watching scope movies (2.4:1, or there about) without black bars present, then your setup is not correct, the picture is zoomed/cropped and you are lowering the resolution of the picture. There are countless "black bars" threads on this forum along with a very good sticky explaining aspect ratios, if you care to read more about the topics.

Not sure I understand the "clearly my setup is superior" statement, but if you are happy with it, then that's all that matters (for you). What TV do you have?

If your TV is set to "Just Scan", it should be doing 1:1 pixel mapping. You should definitley see small black bars on all 1:85 films you watch.

Edit: Sony calls this "Full Pixel", all it does is disable your display's overscan.

As this is only a problem with films in 2.40.1 ratios, I see no rush. My Sky box outputs at 1080i, no stretching, PS3 upscales DVD's to the right ratio's and quality, and all my blu Rays are 1.78.1 ratio. Are there even that many DVD's with 2.40.1? Seems stupid as it'd be the same display, but 2.40.1 just adds black bars to get a bit more width in.

I feel your pain, Automission. I just found out my set-up is superior also. Still, I'm envious that you have no black bars.

No seriously though, your TV is zooming into the picture. Very rarely do you see a Blu-ray release that actually fills up the entire screen. The only ones I have that I can think of are Pan's Labyrinth and the Lost seasons.

I'm certain they aint, I remember toying around with different display modes on my TV. Just scan will display more detail than the 16:9 display would.

Just checked em all. 4:3 mode has some detail, all the other modes, zoom, etc cut loads out, 16:9 cuts some out, just scan adds extra to the image. Hmm. Looked at my tv. Nope no black bars. The only black bars I can see just happen to be the black case around my TV.

So say what you like, that no blu Rays released so far display in perfect full resolution. Cause all of mine do.

Erm, yes as a matter of fact.
Futurama, Benders game, 1.78.1
Futurama, into the wild green yonder, 1.78.1
Lost Season 4, 1.78.1
Cloverfield, 1.78.1
Stargate Continuum, 1.78.1

Hardly a "handful" and all 1.78.1. And if not even one out of five Blu Rays is in 2.40.1, then I hardly see it as being a problem. Anyone got a list of Blu Rays in 1.78.1 and those in 2.40.1?

Seriously, you people are all jerks here. I make a mistake or two, I have all my blu Rays appear in full resolution, and all you can do to reply is type loads of smilies and call me a retard. Nice. Nice community.

Well, based on the movies you've watched (and they are only a handful), you shouldn't be seeing any black bars, particularly if your set's overscan is a bit high. No matter, though.

As for folks and their smileys, you gotta admit that when you post a statement like "clearly my set is superior", you've got to expect some fun razzing. Don't take it too personal, as I'm sure most of it was all meant to be in fun. I'd be careful calling everyone around here jerks, as some folks were trying to help you understand what you are seeing.

Isn't that the exact definition of a handful? 3~5 movies?

Aren't those mostly TV shows? For TV shows 1.78:1 is the norm.

Anyway if you're looking for a list of content that's close to 16:9 (there are 1.66:1 ~ 1.85:1 movies in this list) you can start here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=9502

A self-masking Constant-Image-Height setup is the best way to avoid black-bars (if you're opposed to them I guess) without sacrificing picture quality...... or you could just buy T.V. shows on Blu-ray, but I'd go with the prior...
