Default Free advice from friendly forum vet?

I remember from another thread there are at least two vets lurking around here. When I got home from work today, as my dogs were running to greet me... my shar pei apparently stepped on something and got a nasty puncture wound between the pads of her feet. It was bleeding pretty heavy but some pressure stopped the bleeding fairly quickly. My wife is cleaning it up with saline solution as I type, and I know from my own experience it will be quite sore for a few days.

Would you recomend a trip to the vet for some prophylactic antibiotics? I can get a hold of some Rimadyl without going to the vet. Would you recomend the Rimadyl if for nothing else than to get her mind off of it for a few hours? She can be a serious drama queen when she gets hurt, so it's hard to tell how much is pain and how much is put on.

I seemed to remember a thread I was reading some time ago about vets. So I did a quick search and sure enough I wasn't dreaming.

badboi is a vet. Maybe you can PM him? It's my only suggestion for you. Hope it helps.

Thank you..... you're very kind! I know it will be sore for a few days..... but it's funny how much of a drama queen she is. There have been a few times when she has jumped wrong and tweaked her front leg, and she'll scream and then act like she can't move, and limp like a cripple when she does move. Then you give her a Rimadyl and she forgets it was ever hurt and never limps again.

She's my pride though!

yeah...his name is just deceiving...

on topic...my neighbor is a vet and she took care of my dumb golden lab after he tried playing with a raccoon...the coon won...anyways...she said keep the wounds clean, easy advice...right? well...his scratches started getting really infected and she had to put in some drains and stitched him up. He finally got better after a few days of antibiotics..just watch for swelling.

I'm sure she'll be fine. I just worry about infection. Working in physical therapy in a nursing home.... we see our fair share of wounds and infection can be NASTY.

I have no idea what she punctured it on. I looked and just couldn't find anything. But I do know that this whole area used to be farm land years ago. I have found many strange things, like old rusty saw blades, in the ground while doing yard work. In the specific area where she got hurt, I know there is a rusty old barbed wire fence below the surface. I have pulled as much up as I could.... but I'm sure there is still some under there. It's under a giant Live Oak tree so grass never grows there to provide a protective surface from whatever lurks just below.

Thanks! Her father was a Shar Pei and her mother was half Shar Pei and half pit bull. To me she is almost indistinguishable from "old school" shar pei before they were "Americanized" and made overly wrinkly, tiny eared, show dogs.

In China they are very athletic dogs used for guard duty and boar hunting, and she has that kind of build. It's very strange because she's not built like an American Shar Pei or a pit bull.

There's a traditional "bone mouth" shar pei on this site for comparison. It's almost like adding that little bit of pit bull cleaned out most of the westernization that has been done to the breed.

That's one pretty looking dog! (I'd say handsome, but she's a *****). And I agree...the "Americanized" stock is way too wrinkly.

I'm no Vet unfortunately, but I know that dogs can lick it to keep it clean, so you shouldn't wrap it unless you are putting something on it...... I'm pretty sure that breed would just chew it off though, then you've got additional problems!

My buddies' pit-bull sliced his paw open pretty badly on a piece of glass while digging a hole in the yard and he took it to the vet and in the end they just told him to let it heal on its' own...... so maybe just keep an eye on it..... but again... I'm no vet.

I really need a more recent picture. I got her a very active playmate that has trimmed every bit of fat off of her and left her very cut and athletic looking. You'd never guess she's seven years old now.

It's not just the pei... the show world tends to damage many breeds. Have you seen any German Shephards in dog shows lately? They've shortened the rear haunches so much they look almost crippled. It's a shame when you realize all the genetic difficulties that result from all the inbreeding used to advance the strange traits that the show world finds desirable.

The pei has some of the worst genetic problems of almost any breed. Familial Shar Pei fever, amyloidosis, entropion and mucinosis are just a few of the health problems caused by the huge changes done to the breed. Fortunately Annie only had to deal with entropian and a mild bout of mucinosis when she was young.

Entropian is an eye problem. Pei's eyes are able to "roll in" somewhat to be protected in a fight, which sometimes allows the bottm eye lid to irritate the eyeball and once it starts it's a vicious cycle that gets worse until you have corrective surgery (that wasn't cheap.) Mucin is a substance under the pei's skin which allows the skin to slide more easily, and when a pei produces too much mucin you get these bubbles in the skin. A quality no soy diet fixed that issue.

I'm sorry..... I'm going on. I love dogs more than HT.... I could talk about them forever!

That's ok...talk all you want! It's good to be passionate about something...anything! No passion, no life!

I had a Yellow Lab years ago (Remy was his name) and I know what you mean about the German Shephard. The Lab's now are much shorter and stockier than before. They were so much more majestic 20 years ago. All in all he was still a great dog. If I had a pic at hand I'd post it, but I don't.

My mother has a chocolate lab/basset hound mix. She's hilarious. She looks just like a chocolate lab in every single way.... except with really short legs. She LOVES to fetch and will continuously pick up her ball and toss it in your lap until you throw it. Unfortunately all that running on those tiny little legs and heavy lab body have caused a lot of hip problems. She's had surgery on one hip and needs it on the other. Labs are great dogs too.

What I REALLY want when my current dogs are no longer with me is a Dogue De Bordeaux; but my wife says it will drool too much.

Beautiful breed that is...The French Mastiff...kinda has a Boxer look to it as well, especially the eyes. I live in an apartment right now, but if I were to get a dog I'd really like an Alaskan Malamute. My best friend has 2 of them and they are amazing. Gentle Giants is what they are. Maybe one day when I'm fortunate enough again to live in a house, that's exactly what'll do.

You are a fan of the molossers as well! They are all great dogs but it takes a mentally strong person to raise one correctly. They all REALLY want to be the alpha, and if you let them.... it's all downhill from there.

I'm a big fan of subordination training when it comes to the molosser breeds especially. Starting from day one when you get them, never spank them for punishment.... but just put them into a submissive postion by rolling them on to their backs and gently restraining them until they calm down.
