i do hope the pirates win lol i mean i liked the first matrix not so the other ones, but like the article said its clear warner are pushing hd dvd. Say if warner where to release the matrix on blu ray the same time as hd dvd. You would actually see the end of hd dvd i think.

The funny thing, is Pirates is exclusive to Bluray. Where the Matrix will be out in a few months (hopefully) on Bluray. So we'll get them BOTH!

I liked the first Matrix which will be great in HD, but overall the other ones didn't really thrill me. The 2nd one had a great car chase, the 3rd one I don't really remember much about it. Hopefully, when they are released on blu-ray they are sold individually.

They are making such a big deal out of The Matrix on HD DVD, that I wonder about that.

If Warner releases The Matrix for BD into what will be a huge second half of blockbusters for BD, that will all but wipe out whatever gains HD DVD got from temporary exclusivity, and provide an even more obvious contrast to the title issue.

Until I see it released, I am going to predict excuses from Warner for why The Matrix can't come out on Blu-ray.

Next up: LOTR to counteract Pirates 3, Spidey3, Fantasic 4 - Silver Surfer, Simpsons, etc.

The timing and exclusivity of the Matrix release is an obvious slap in the face to Blu-ray.

Warner has also been short-changing us in terms of audio in most of their BD releases, and their bit-starved HD DUD VC-1 ports on Blu-ray are also irritating me. I'm going to reward them by shifting most of my purchases toward Sony/Disney/Fox/MGM/Lionsgate for the next few months.

In terms of competition between the Matrix films vs. the Pirates films -- I predict that POTC 1 & 2 will run away with sales. Not just because the Blu-ray player base is bigger, but the Pirates films appeal to a much wider audience of people.

I personally like Matrix, but the 2 sequels were real stinkers.

This is basically what I have been doing ever since Warner p***** me off with the poor PQ of the Goodfellas BD. It was the last straw for me. Low bit-rate, VC-1, HD DED ported rubbish with lossy audio is what we consistently get from them, and I've had enough. And where are the 18 titles that they promised for BD but have still only released on HD DED?

First I decided I would boycott Warner releases entirely, but if enough BD supporters did that, it would only give them the excuse they are looking for to drop their support for Blu-ray entirely. So, I've decided to do to them what they have done to us - throw them the occasional bone. I just recently purchased Scooby Doo on BD, and I have pre-orders in for Blood Diamond and Flags of our Fathers. Those are the first Warner titles I've purchased since I bought the Goodfellas BD when it was released. That's it for me and Warner BDs for a good long while.

That's a good policy, and essentially the same route I've taken. I got Goodfellas, and was actually pleased with it. The source material is not in the best shape, and the BD version for all its faults smokes the DVD I had.

The only Warner title I've bought since then is Dog Day Afternoon. I won't be ordering Blood Diamond or Flags.

Warner pissed us off even more with their lack of support for SACD in their music division. If they start doing a better job with Blu-ray, I may forgive them.

Good policy but I'm not quite as forgiving. I really wanted the Road Warrior, Matrix, and 300 but until they stop screwing around I won't purchase anything from them. I didn't invest the money I have into HD gear to buy mediocre product to watch on it.

I gotta admit that makes sense. If everone boycotted Warner they would just plain drop Blu. Last Warner title I bought was The Departed. They can keep the Matrix. The only good one was the first one and it dragged at times. The 3rd one was plain terrible. I have the first two and have no reason to upgrade as I seldom watch them. If the wife isn't interested then they don't get watched except when she isn't home or in bed. Now The Pirate movies are gonna get alot of viewin' and you can take that to the bank.

I got both Blu-ray and HD DVD players. I bought both Pirates of the Caribbean and the Matrix the day they came out. I am glad that Pirates is exclusive to Blu-ray and Matrix is out first on HD DVD because I have a reason for having both formats. Both movie collection look great. But I prefer Blu-ray over HD DVD due to the fact that Blu-rays are difficult to scratch and I am picky about scratches. HD DVD scratches very easy. the only way I will pick HD DVD over blu-ray when a title is on both formats is when hd dvd has a combo because not everybody owns HD DVD or blu-ray. I noticed that alot of WB movies are not on blu-ray and only out on HD DVD. That kind of sucks. Anyways, when a WB movie is on both formats, is it always better on HD DVD. thats what I hear all the time but when I have both formats in my house and compare them, they look exactly the same except for the color. But when I compare two of the same movies on different DVD Players, the color is always different. Also is the Goodfellas better on HD DVD than on blu-ray because I have the blu-ray version and it looks great.

So how this DVDcombo thing affects your buying decision, since you already own both a HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player?

Well not a lot. Just 21. Out of Warner's about 80 High Definition titles.
So only about a quarter haven't been released on Blu-ray yet. And for those, I have this quote from them:

"It is still our plan to release everything on Blu-Ray that we release or released on HD-DVD" - Warner Brothers

And Blu-ray has another 210 additional titles in the US apart from Warner's approx 60 BDs to choose from, of which about 170 are not available on HD DVD and won't be.

Of course, Warner should get on with the program, as they basically put the HD DVD master inside a BD for now, instead of optimizing the transfers for the BD's higher bitrate or capacity. Which brings me to:

They both should look the same (including the color) as they use the same VC-1 encoded video file for the majority of their HD DVDs and BDs.

Errr.. (*Captain Kirk ST-V voice here excuuse me, what does HD DVD have with a DVD play.. er.. I mean, you can't play HD DVDs on DVD players.. so are you comparing DVDs to HD DVDs and/or BDs?

As I mentioned above, they should look the same as they're the same video file.

The freeway was the only reason I bought the 2nd on DVD actually.

Pirates will probably win.
I enjoyed the first matrix movie but not so much the other two.
Why couldn't they pull a blood diamond movie for the matrix releases. One month earlier than hd-dvd with the useless IME features removed.
Once again warner, you've proved your bias !

I basically do the same - I won't buy anything from WB that is a port from HD DVD or with lossy audio (release 1.8 will make my WB SD DVD good enough until they get the message).

I will buy Blood Diamond as it seems to be a BD specific encode with LPCM.
