Default Jump on 805 or wait?

I'm REALLY wrestling with myself here. I found an Onkyo 805 refurb for $599. I've been wanting to upgrade my receiver for months now. I've just been feeling like right now the Onkyo 606 is the weakest link in my audio system. The 805 has so many fans and I believe it's a really solid receiver for $599. The thing that holds me back from jumping is that it's missing a few features I'd like to have. It only has 3 HDMI inputs... so when I upgrade my PC to one with HDMI out.... I'd have to get a switcher... doable but less than elegant IMO. Also I'd REALLY like a receiver that has the ability to output audio and video over 2 HDMI's at the same time. Sadly.... I feel it will be at least two years before a receiver like that hits at a price I feel comfortable paying.

Have any of you guys upgraded from a 606, or other lower line Onkyo, to the 805? If so... how would you describe the change?

I think Driver King went from a 605 to an 805. He should be over soon enough. As for your 2 HDMI issue. it'll be a long time (if ever) before we see that. Only a few receivers have dual outs at the moment (Marantz) and it's an either/or situation, which is great for roll down screens.

edit: On another note, the 805 is a tank of a receiver. If you actually found one and want it, get it. They will only get tougher from here on out.

Yamaha has a receiver now that will do the dual HDMI out... the 3900BL I think it is.... but it's about $1700 right now. I've actually got all the info keyed in right now and just have to hit the submit button in the shopping cart for the 875 for $799. I just haven't brought myself to do it yet. Usually I am not so wishy on purchases.... so maybe I'm not supposed to do it

I'd wait. I like my 805, but it hasn't really been wowing me recently. I'd like to eventually get a nice Pioneer Elite one. $599 for refurb is kind of high i think, I paid $685 off ebay, with 15% cash back, so like $585 brand new.(minus warranty though, kind of sucks)

Yeah..... the upgrade bug has just really been eating at me for months on this receiver. I know I can get something much better than what I have... but I don't want to settle either. ARRGGH

..... I mean... so it does . If that's your goal, you should save up for it. Sure it will take awhile, but maybe it'll be a year, then the prices will drop on this unit making it affordable for less or sooner or in a lower model...

OK guys..... you talked me down from the edge.... thanks. The 606 isn't the best receiver out there... but it will do the job just fine until the right receiver for me comes along.

WHEW.... that was a close one!

I pretty sure my dad is wanting to sell his Onkyo 905 and go with a pre/pro. If your interested I can ask him what he wants for it and maybe we can go from there.

DBlackGT,

Goodness! I looks like the apple didn't fall far from the tree! Your dad's setup is quite nice (as is your own).

BTW, how's the fishin'?

The title of the thread is Jump on 805 or wait?. I find that very interesting.

My recomendation is to buy it if you can afford it and do not have to use your credit cards.

No matter what your final decision may be, please don't JUMP on the receiver. You may end up breaking it.

Yes!!! Buy within your means....

Credit cards are for emergencies and business trips that are reimbursed only!

And no, HT gear is NOT an emergency!

I went from the receiver in the HT-SR800 system (I believe it is the HT-550 receiver) and the difference between the receivers was not only night and day but eye-opening too. I could not believe how much better it sounded to me. The radio even sounded a whole ton better. I may be the wrong person to ask if it is worth it or not at this point. I am biased and I got mine for $375 last May and have not had a single issue yet *knock on wood*). There are plenty of great receivers out there now. I still think the 805 is a pretty bad ass receiver. It warms up my room better than a small space heater.

All I know is when I went from my Onkyo HTIB receiver to the 605 it was like night and day. The difference in sound quality was easily heard, and that was before I upgraded my speakers. You should expect the 805 to have a more refined sound being that is a higher end receiver. Its funny how Onkyo has dumbed down the replacement 806 and still sell it for roughly the same price. I'd say its because they gave us too much with the 805 for the money. The 805 has pretty much the same makeup as some of their higher end models. If you can make do with the number of HDMI ports I don't see any reason not to get it, because there aren't many receivers under a grand that really compare. You can maybe look at some Pioneer Elite models and Marantz, but I don't think there is anything that is leagues ahead in that price range...if they are even better. They may just equal it. Till this day I kick myself for not holding out and getting an 805 myself.

Thanks man, yeah I get a lot of my tech habits and wants from my dad haha. It sucks being 21 and seing him buy all the things he wants, but then again thats what working hard your whole life gets you, right?

Anyways the fishing is just about to start getting underway here in socal. The waters are warming up, the overcast is as much, and the days are becoming just beautiful. I predict in the next few months my movie/HT budget will go down and the fishing budget to increase haha.

I went from the 605 to the 805 recently. Paid less shipped than that, but I found a good deal at Audiogon. I would recommend looking there. Mine is a used unit, not a refurb. It's in pristine condition.

Personally, I love it. I sold my 605 to help eat up the cost. The advanced Audyssey setup, the extra HDMI's (which honestly I don't need currently) the power handling, the pre-outs (not currently used in my setup) and the DACs are just some of the things that I love. You're honestly going to be hard-pressed to find a receiver that's this feature-rich at that price-point. Hence why the 806 is so trimmed down.

I think I made a great move that gives more oomph to my HT than ever before. My Def Techs thank me every time I fire it up.

I know that Pioneer Elites are fantastic receivers, and they're every bit as good once you get up in their models, but how much is that going to run? Separates may be the way you want to go, but you're also looking at a lot of moolah.

In the end it's your money but I'm very pleased with my decision.
