Default no Blu0ray at COSTCO, but they do have HD-DVD...

I was just at the local Costco in seattle, and they has a couple boxes of HD-DVD's but no Blu-ray anywhere to be found, i would say they had a total of maybe 100 disc's...(not titles) i think they are catering to the typical microsoft employee around here... haha, is there any of either at anyone else's Costco's?

yeah I know Costco use to sell Blu-Ray players on costco.com but when I was at my local Costco all they had was HD-DVD players. I don't know if they stopped carrying them or what. But they were selling High Definition movies at your Costco?

I live in Seattle, but I haven't been in a Costco for months and when I was I didn't think to look what they carried in the way of HD, that's not good to hear.

well from what I saw they weren't exactly flying off the shelves. I don't know if anybody knows that Costco carries them but I think there are a ton of people out there who are just not ready to commit to either side until the format war is over.

I haven't seen any HD DVD or BR in my Costco here in Atlanta. I noticed that they are selling BR discs on Costco.com which they hadn't done before. I'm hoping they'll show up in the stores soon although their prices didn't seem to be any better than my local Frys.

I'm in Los Angeles and went to Costco today and was disappointed that they didn't have any Blu-Ray, just HD-DVD. But I did see for the first time at Costco PS3's for sale so chances are they will carry Blu-Ray too, it's just a matter of time.

They do have a tittle @ Costco.com non at the 3 Costcos by my house though... Actually they have a few online now I just checked for the one tittle I saw "The Holiday". Their prices aren't "cheap" like you would expect from costco but fairly similar to amazon.com's

I don't shop there myself but all it takes is one purchase and the person has chosen a side. It will be interesting if Sony steps up and hands them a deal.

These are good on-line deals...the rest as has been said are so-so.

well, i go to the Costco downtown seattle a lot and HD-DVD's weren't there last week, so i think they just put them out. i doubt they will sell well. they might have blu-ray dvd's over by the video games though, i didn't check that since they moved them away from the dvd's. i was looking for someone to ask why the they didn't have any blu-ray dics but finding someone there that knows about dvd's is a crap shoot.
they will see the light soon. they better, and not just cosy up to their NW neighbor microsoft... too many x-box freaks here for my liking.haha

Default Costco buys...

when they think that they are getting a good deal on something, not necessarily when they think they can provide a good deal to customers (though they like to portray it that way). They rarely have the "best of breed" of anything. They like to move murchandise no matter what it is -- they'd be selling Beta tapes if they got a good deal on them and thought people would buy them.

My guess (and it's just an educated guess based upon knowing several people who work in the CE sections of a few stores) is that Costco got what they thought was a good deal on several HD DVD disks. In a few weeks they could carry only Blu-ray disks having gotten a good deal on those.

The same goes for the players. Costco rarely stocks a particular brand or model of CE items.

Default Bad news Boys...HDDVD @ Costco

Went to costco today and about dropped my jaw when I physically saw HDDVD setup immediately upon walking in. They have a 60" Phillips plasma playing Charlie & the Choco Factory and a bin with HDDVD's on each side of the player.

Behind the unit to the left was 4 HUGE stacks of HD-D2's. (looks exactly like the HD-A2). And for $349.99. Their movies were all $18.99 ea. And they had popular titles like Batman, V for Vendetta etc. At this price I couldn't help but think...if I were on the fence, i'd jump in at this price.

Blu-ray was nowhere to be seen.

Costco generally carries commodity items so needless to say
I left there feeling very defeated as a BD enthusiast. Yes, I own both formats, But I'm really starting to lose faith in BD. Is it just me or does it seem like they are on vacation or something? Fox isn't doing anything, theres really no slew of releases slated for a couple weeks. And the news is starting to "trickle" in. Now with Sammy going combo, And seeing this today I started thinking. People buy shit at costco like crazy and when I saw that stack I started doing the math in my head...there was atleast 50HDDVD players there, and how many costco's are there!!!

I work at BB and they hardly move, but we also charge more...but ps3 and BD players aren't really moving either now.

what do you guys think? Could costco pwn us?

I think you should have a stiff drink and relax.

If you get too depressed, just keep looking at the videoscan numbers. That should help.

Thanks for the info. The main important thing the BLU-RAY camp has going for itself is more exclusive studios like Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, and Disney. Toshiba is the only company making HD-DVD players. The worse thing that could happen is more manufactories will follow LG and Samsung and announce combo players.
As long as Disney and Fox stay exclusive to Blu-ray both formats will coexist for years with many brands and models of universal players to choose from.

Thanks to Universal Studios both formats are going to coexist for years.

Toshiba is hungrier than Sony and the other BD Player vendors. Sony has dropped the cheaper 20GB PS3 model, meaning an even greater disparity (for now) between the cheapest HD-DVD player and cleapest Blu Ray player.

Let's face it, if it wasn't for the PS3 Blu Ray would be dead, but with PS3 mommentum slowing for now, Sony & and the rest of the BD camp need to get more agressive on moving the market with cheaper players.

Comparing same title rankings on Amazon does not lead to warm fuzzies about where things may be at this point.

I saw a HD-DVD set up in Fry's today that had a pamphlet below it stating buy any toshiba HD-DVD player and get 5 movies free! They are upping the ante now! I knew they had 4, since when did it change to five?

I think that offer started at the beginning of March.

It's a limited selection to choose from, but it is a pretty nice deal, and probably makes that $349 Costco price on the player look even better to a lot of people.

To me it is a sign that HD DVD is bargain basement. HD DVD is going to be the Costco format with CEs like Toshiba and these Chinese players we keep hearing about.

Personally I don't find that being a positive for the format.

I believe costco.com carries BDs too though for what it is worth.

Costco has had this setup for about 3 weeks now. The San Marcos store has a similar setup. Costco isn't going to make a dent in the BD sales. Look at this week's Videoscan numbers (Ending Apr 1st.) BD had literally no exclusive releases and HD-DVD had a huge release (Children of Men) and a better version of Happy Feet. They only gained like .4% of the year's sales back that week and BD still had like 70% marketshare for the year. They are going to need alot more than cheap players to win this thing out.

With BD+ just over the horizon, FOX should be reentering the game very, very soon. Looking at the numbers Sony put out, the only titles that are selling well are Day and Date titles and some recent blockbusters. The studios need to look at this trend and make sure every new release is day and date, not just the ones that will be more popular. The faster we can get people out of the habit of buying DVDs and immediately looking for the BD version, the better adoption goes for the format. Also bring out the recent blockbusters with great looking transfers and great audio quality, these are the movies people are buying. Once we get this whole war sorted out there will be plenty of time to release older catalog titles. Gives the studio more time for remastering as well.
