Moderators, I thought this might be a good topic to go into the "sticky" section of the forum.
It's never too early to speculate I guess. I would like to know from everyone what their hopes/predictions will be for the PS4. Will Sony "Wii-tise" the PS4 in an attempt to save R&D dollars, providing only a moderate upgrade to the PS3? Will Sony go in a completely different direction with PS4 and NOT include a Cell processor, but instead go with a cheaper multi-core chipset? Please, give me your thoughts. |

i think that this topic already exists somewhere... anyway it is always foun to speculate...
![]() first of all lets see if sony still wants to enter the game business after what is happening... probably ps4 will be pionner on the new format of that time etc etc. no more drives for games everything will be done online from shopping games to playing games. |

I dont' know. I've seen it as a sticky in other forums and I liked the fact that it's easy to locate the topic.

I think the new machine would have to support everything a PC does from an Internet/multimedia perspective (3rd party browsers, applications, all types of media files, etc)
Controllers with not only motion based activity support but touch pad supporting apps. It should be able to support full 1080p video conferencing (like Cisco TelePresence) Seamlessly support VoIP to replace your land line phone (you can answer your phone via a speaker on your controller - which has caller id on the touchpad display) Support for 4G technology such as WIMAX for Internet services. And cost less than 499.00 |

That would be awesome... and it would also have at least a 2 TB HDD drive, and a BD-RW drive for buring the shows we recorded from IPTV. |

I'd like it to work like the Wii... except without the need for a controller... like if you're playing a driving game, a car hologram forms around you. If you're playing "Uncharted", guns form in your hand, ala "The Matrix".
I'd like it to be completely solar powered... and when the PS3 is not in use, it can be used for an air conditioner, a light, a washer & dryer, and can drive me around when I need it to... without using any gas, or requiring car insurance or a driver's license. The ability to play games would be a plus, but not a necessity. I'd also like for it to be priced around $100. ![]() ![]() ![]() ~Alan |

On topic: Sony would be committing market suicide if they moved away from the Cell architecture. Devs are finally getting to grips with it and some even like it, so continuing from there would be a very good idea. Sony were very lucky the PS2 was so popular, if they had tried to force Cell down the developers throat's from a position of weakness PS3 would be dead from lack of third party support like GCN. Looking at the GPU side, Sony need to make more of an impact, I would suggest a multi-core GPU design, similar to Cell, one master core with a couple of contributor cores. Sony ushered in the age of multi-core CPU gaming with PS2, and I think they can do the same for the GPU (not multi-GPU solutions on PC, those are expensive and stupid) on PS4. RAM has to, has to be unified. Probably by using a custom GPU and making it work with XDR2 or making Cell work with GDDR6/7 a la PowerXCell8i. Everything the PS3 has got as standard, plus WHDI and TrasferJet. |

I don't see Sony completely doing a "Wii" makeover to the console (Using the same console under a different name with mild upgrades). But, I definitely see them using a more conservative approach for R&D.
Blu-ray is probably a given as the tech is gaining market share and becoming cheaper. I'm not sure about the Cell. It depends if 3rd party devs want Sony to support it because of the effort to learn it, or if they want them to drop it because it's more trouble than it's worth. Flash memory for permanent storage will become more viable. Magnetic hard drives have a high fixed base price, while flash memory costs can be reduced over time. I definitely see that as a possiblility. $400 or lower is a must with a decent lineup at launch. They need a good FPS, Casual game, and jRPG right away at the start. |

I was thinking that either an upgraded version if Cell or a brand new processer would help do the work. I was thinking also a new kind of controller, more like the keyboard and mouse, but also the old DualShock for those other games in which its not feasible for mouse control. Also, a much faster BD drive (because I've had it with mandatory instals) with up to 1 TB support from discs. Plus an on board fiber optic 500 Mb modem that will be provided through a free broadband network by Sony, providing the countries which already have the PSN, even in rural areas. A man can dream. |

![]() Definitely true though, below $350 if possible. I would say $299 should be the set target, and the PS3 should be $149 when it launches. |

I definitely see Sony continuing to use CELL in the PS4. They've poured so much money in R&D into the CELL, it just wouldn't make much sense not to use it. Plus you have to believe that R&D for PS4 would be fairly minimal in comparison to the PS3. Assuming they do use CELL in PS4, I wonder just how much more powerful it would be. Would they up the clock speed on the new CELL or would it still be 3.2ghz with simply more SPE's and PPE's?
I also believe that Sony will continue their partnership with Nvidia and include one of their next generation graphics chips. I know some have speculated that Sony might include an additional CELL just for graphics (something they apparently wanted to do in the PS3 but at the last minute decided to go with Nvidia). However I believe they will stay with Nvidia, if for no other reason to make sure that BC will transistion much easier to the PS4. It would be awesome to have PS4 be BC with PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles!! Overall I really do think that with the amount of money they have lost with the PS3, Sony will be looking to design PS4 on the cheap. I do not see PS4 being the huge leap in graphics that we've seen from the PS2 to the PS3. I mean looking at Killzone2, I honestly don't know how much better it can get unless Sony is thinking bigger like holographic systems or at least 3D gaming or virtual reality.
