Default 2009 NFL Draft

I know it's still 6-7 weeks away, but I always love draft-time.

Who do you think the Lions will take? Will they trade it away? What does your team need? Who do you hope they'll take? Where do you hope your favorite college guys go?

Pretty good draft class this year!

You beat me to it! I was just about to start this thread.

I am unfortunatly a Lions fan. I think they will take Stafford, but they could suprise and go with the LB from Wake Forest Curry. I am trying to hold out hope that Stafford can be next years Matt Ryan.

I was pumped when I heard they were trying to get Cutler, but that won't happen now since Cassel is taken.

The Lions will grab Stafford. They need to give the fans something to cheer about and make a big splash. His combine workouts have been ok but he's got a big arm, big frame and most importantly...we wants to play for the Lions.

I'm a Pat's fan. They have 5 out of the first 89 picks. They deperately need to fill voids at the LB and CB position. We need to get YOUNGER on the defensive side.

I'm a UGA grad/fan, and I think Stafford will surprise those of you who didn't get to watch him on a weekly basis. The kid has an absolute canon of an arm. A great deal of his incompletions were either (a) overthrows, or (b) bullets his WRs dropped. With a guy like Calvin Johnson, those will be significanly decreased.

I like his attitude about Detroit; at least he's not pulling an Eli Manning.

But it's a tough call for Detroit --- get the stud OL to help your QBs, or get a QB and build around that. Chances are the Lions will not be good next year no matter what, and the QBs next year will be good, too.

What a mess the Cutler situation has become. That would have been a GREAT trade for the Lions. Cutler is better than Cassel IMO but one could understand why McDaniels wanted Cassel.

The Lions will pass on selecting a quarterback with the first overall pick. While the 2009 class itself isn't that bad at all, I think this is a pretty weak year for QB's. I think Stafford and Sanchez will both be good but not great NFL players, but besides them there are no other QB's I see being solid NFL starters. As for me, I'm a Bills fan. We need help at the defensive line, tight end, and wide receiver.

Well said about throwing to CJ aka Megatron!!!

I also like his attitude about Detroit.

The Lions will probably grab Stafford. They need to find a face for their franchise. Although, Aaron Curry is probably the best football player in the draft, you don't build a franchise around a linebacker (unless you're the Baltimore Ravens).

I am a St. Louis Rams fan, so I'm hoping Detroit picks Stafford. That would leave the Rams with their pick between Curry, Jason Smith, and Michael Crabtree or the option of trading down...all great choices.

they may take Curryor Stafford...but they really need a O-Lineman cause a QB is no good when he is always on his back...

Best O-Lineman in Draft:
Andre Smith; Offensive Tackle, Alabama
Eugene Monroe; Offensive Tackle, Virginia
Jason Smith; Offensive Tackle, Baylor

I have seen a mock draft with Andre SMith falling all the way to the Lions #20 pick because of all his "problems". I'll take the head-case with the talent at #20.

I'm a Browns fan...... our team needs EVERYTHING We always draft poorly..... so I just hope they pick guys that don't have career ending injuries during training camp!!! (Not a guy we drafted, but LeCharles Bentley was one of the most recent disasters ..... pro-bowl center who never played one snap for us.... or Kellen Winslow Jr. who's a stud, but was hurt half the time, then fought with the ownership etc.... )

As far as college guys go.... although I'm a big Michigan fan.... I went to Cincinnati, and they have a lot of guys going pretty early in this up-coming draft..... so I look forward to seeing where they go.......

I'm not sure what the Lions should do. There definitely isn't one stud in this draft that stands out as a can't miss prospect. Drafting a quarterback that's an underclassmen can be risky. You look at the stud quarterbacks and almost every one was a 4 (or 5) year player. Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch and Vince Young all came out early and flopped. However the list of upperclassmen qbs that flopped is also quite long. You also look at qbs like Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Tony Romo, Matt Cassel and Matt Hasselbeck who were either undrafted or late round picks and you realize just how hard it is to judge a quarterback out of college. I would go with Curry and maybe see if Josh Freeman is available with their 2nd round pick or Rhett Bomar or Nate Davis in the third round.

How do you figure? Isn't it a little too early to make that assessment? To my knowledge, none of them have played an NFL game yet.

+1. Way too pre-mature for a statement like that.

Football is the best example of how being a superstar collegiate athlete doesn't equate to NFL success

the Lions should trade away the 1st overall pick for 2 or 3 extra picks in this year's draft. a 1st rounder and then @ least a 3rd rounder.

get some of the necessary positions covered and then use Kitna for this year yet.

getting a "stud" QB this year will be pointless if they don't have anyone else to protect him. and having a QB that can do something in that crappy offense will be pointless if their defense that can't do anything.

Kitna was traded to the Cowboys.

The question is who would want the number 1 pick? There hasn't been a trade for a top 5 pick in years because of the huge cost (both money and trade compensation) and for a draft without a top tier talent, particularly one at a skill position, I don't think you'd find any takers.

As Luda mentioned, Kitna was traded to the Cowboys. They will use Culpepper as their quarterback this year. I'm not sure why everyone's given up on Drew Stanton, he was drafted in the 2nd round in 2007 and has been injured both years. However, I would give him a chance before using another high pick on a quarterback.

thanks guys, in my defense, i havn't checked on any trades since Friday and don't really pay attn. to the Lions.

but yeah, no one really has any pressing needs where they need to jump into the top 5.

if i were them, i would entertain any/all offers that involved at least 2 picks for the 1.
