I was kinda about this the other day after I finished watching my Cold Mountain DVD, which looks like shit btw. I haven't watched too many DVD's on my HDTV since I got it, but I was shocked that Grandma's Boy actually looked really good for a DVD

Animated movies will always look really good upscaled to HD because if you think about it, there's probably less than a thousand colors on the screen at one given time. With real life movies, every pixel is a different color(about 350,000 for DVD's) so it's more difficult to look good.

I'd say i was most blown away by POTC 2 and 3. The curse of the black pearl looks like crap for some reason tho.

I wondered about this, I re-watched many of my regular dvd's when I bought my Sammy 630, and noticed that a lot of them looked REALLY good.

I was at a video store that was playing the DVD for Transformers on an HDTV. It looked like crap in my opinion.

Star Wars Episodes I, II, III

Superman Returns

Stardust

Gladiator

2001: A Space Odyssey

Kill Bill, Vols. 1 & 2

DVD doesn't deliver like BD does, but these are some notable titles I own on DVD and watched both upconverted and not. I have since upgraded on some of these to BD as well.

Good call on I, Robot. I saw that shortly after I got my HDTV, but before I got a Blu-ray player, so it was coming out of my DVD player via component. It looked pretty good. This was also before my eye was "calibrated" though!

We now watch or listen to all our optical discs (DVD, Blu, CD, etc) through our BDP-S550. The best upscaled DVD I have watched is probably Wall•E, although I have seen that on Blu (on a different TV) and it is awesome in Blu.

I thought that Braveheart, Gladiator and the LOTR films didn't look too bad on upconverted DVD.

It does look great. I think our eyes will bleed when we gaze upon the 1080p version.

It's good to see Gladiator on that list, I'm way overdue to watch it again but have been worried about the PQ on a 46".

Shrek 1 looks really good in SD but I guess that's because it's CGI.

Most definitely! Forgot to mention that one. Very enjoyable to watch off my DVD of it (Redux version as well).

Can't wait for that to come out on BD! I hope it's transferred with great care.
