Default HDTV/DVD player question

Today my sister bought an offbrand 19 in LCD tv from walmart to replace her old (and I mean oldddddddddd) tv in her bedroom. She got this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=10629536 at walmart for Black Friday, it's 720p with no HDMI port.

Anyway, I was going to grab her a cheap dvd player for xmas to go with it, and I have a question. Walmart has a 720p/1080i upscaling player for like $40 that I was going to grab her, but I was wondering if it was worthwhile without an HDMI port on the tv. They can't output 720p+ without HDMI, right?

Would I be better off just getting her a non-upconverting progressive scan player?

I read something about 720p TV's without HDMI outputting dvd's at like 576p or something, but it didn't say whether or not that was with an upconverting player

I'm not the best with home theater stuff. I have a 1080p LCD with HDMI support so I've never had to worry about it.
