I like the idea, but I think the implementation is poor. |

![]() ![]() image courtesy of md99 I posted over at the Digital Bits/Bill Hunt thread regarding these cases. In case you haven't seen them, they seem to be intermittently rolling out on releases such as "The Princess Bride" and "Quantum of Solace". At first, I didn't really mind them, but then I ended up almost damaging the paper liner when I was getting out the movie. Seems like you could also potentially knock loose and/or scratch a disc. It's also been noted that as seen in the pic above, your cover art could stick to the security sticker and become damaged. Supposedly they're recycled. The cost savings (or lack thereof- I really don't know) is thus far not being passed on to the consumer. I'm not really sure of the benefit, since as opposed to bottled water, the product isn't entering a landfill or back into the system. What are your thoughts on these cases? I personally am all for green but don't really like it mixed into my collection. I can definitely confirm that Quantum of Solace has said "viva eco-friendly" case on just about every copy. To me, it's a little weird having that kind of case in my collection.

I'm all for it too, but I'm not sure this is really accomplishing anything but allowing them to cheap out on the case. How many of these are really going to end up in the garbage?

I want cases that are easy to open and close, but mostly that protects the disc and other contents of the case. I want cases that don't break ever nor cause any damage to the contents.

They are absolutely terrible and will only lead to disc/cover art damage.
Scrap them immediately. If I buy one, and the package is damaged in any way, it's going straight back to Amazon! Last edited by Spymaster; 04-01-2009 at 12:22 AM. |

I love the idea of being 'green', but this implementation is horrid. If this becomes the defacto standard then I will replace all of the 'green' cases with standard cases and then throw away the 'green' cases. So now I will be less 'green' than if they stuck with the standard cases.

I am all for them. I drive a hybrid. I recycle (at home and work).
The best numbers I can find is there were 248 million dvd's sold in 2007. So lets say that 200 million were in standard amray cases. If you could save 30%, that would cut down on 60 million dvd cases. That doesn't include software cases or game cases by the way. If you stacked those cases up it would reach 1732 miles into space. If you laid them on their side, end to end, they would almost reach around the earth (23611 miles). 30% is a lot...... if you put in in perspective. Every little bit helps and you have to start somewhere. |
