Default Bad panel on panny 800u

Well, the repairman just left with my 8 month old
tv which has a bad panel. I am sick even thinking
about it. I talked with Panasonic twice to try to
get a replacement but no luck. I must be very lucky
to have one go out as the repairman said he has a couple
a year from panny. Has anyone else had this problem and
how did panny handle it? Should I be concerned after getting
it fixed about the longevity of the set since it has been repaired?

the panel will likely be replaced. our panasonic repair guy told us that the panny panels cost upwards of $1100 for a 50 inch, and they are even more expensive to repair, where LG and samsung panels cost $400-$900

I am confuzzled, Shouldn't it still be under warranty if it is only 8 months old?

to clarify, i was talking about the company's cost to produce panels, not what the OP will be paying.

OK, after reading again I think I have it. OP would prefer to have an entirely new TV but Panasonic prefers to repair the set by replacing the panel.

I certainly can't blame you! That would bug me as well. Based on the prices of those replacement panels posted it sure doesn't seem cost effective to furnish the panel and pay a tech to replace it. You would think they would just eat it and give you a new set.

No idea about the longevity going forward. I would hope that if done correctly that it would be like new again. I would just watch it like a hawk and go over it with a fine tooth after it is replaced. If it isn't 100% like new I would turn up the noise on Panasonic.

Hope everything works out!
I certainly feel your pain!

That makes since. I'd rather have a brand new display too.

i'd so get a new tv set also if isn't cost effective with them trying to replace the panel thats worth near half of the tv's cost it's self...With them sticking the cost all on you.

the thing that bug's me,when they give you the run around, you wait 3+ months for things to get fixed, the So called repair man doesn't return your call's..

bah...

This happened to my TV recently, same model as the OPs. I was watching it one morning and all of a sudden a 3" vertical black line appeared on the TV. It wouldn't go away, and it was on all the inputs. Panasonic was very good about arranging a repair and a local repairman was at my house within a couple days. The repairman knew immediately that the panel was going to need to be replaced but Panasonic made him try changing out some parts first. This didn't work so they replaced the panel. From the time I first had the problems to the time it was done being repaired was a little over a month. My TV was about 10 months old but under warranty so I didn't have to pay anything, and I haven't had any problems since.

Well, they ended up replacing the panel. I cant really complain
I guess total turnaround will be a little over a week. They wouldnt budge
on a new TV so guess I will be ok if all looks the same as before.

the thing about the plasma panel is the minute anything is wrong with it, it is pretty much a guaranteed replacement. there are waaaaay too many connectors and such for a technician to actually spend time trying to fix it.

Same thing happened to my father's TH-50PZ80. Panasonic agree to change his set for a new model for 150$ (CDN) even if his TV was 13 months old... Somebody is supposed to drop off the new set and take the old one back in the next 10 days.

Anyway I hope I don't ran into the same problem with mine (I bought it at the same time as his)

I wonder if I also have a bad panel...I posted this in another thread, but here's what just happened with my 46PZ800U:

Tried unplugging & plugging back in...tried holding power button...tried disconnecting all sources. Nothing. Waiting for a call back from Panny technician to scheduled in home warranty service, but in the meantime:

anyone have this happen? Thoughts?

should I be worried after it's fixed? It's under mfg warranty now, but what about in 6 more months (I've only owned it since 12/08)?

not just plasma, problems with lcd panels are the same. i had to lcd's in the past and the panels went bad on both sets....both in under a year! it is going to be a long, long time before these tv's become as reliable as the old crt sets
