Default problem with 5.1

I just set up my onkyo 606 and energy take classic 5.1 speakers. I couldnt be happier. For the size of my bedroom they work perfectly. But here's my question. I wanted to test out the 5.1 to some band of brothers and black hawk down, and to be honest the left, center, and right, speakers sound perfect,
but i didn't hear anything out of the rears. I even put my ear up to the speakers and couldnt really hear anything. So im asking
is there a setting on my Ps3 i have to turn on,
is it a setting on my onkyo i have to turn on,
or do i really have to pay my local bestbuy 100's of dollars to come out and "callibrate" my speakers.
any response or ideas would be greatly appreciated

you do not have to pay Best Buy to come out and calibrate.

did you run audessy?
are you getting any sound at all? or just a little sound?

yeah it came with a mic and i set it up and i let it do its thing and after a while i get a random error message, in the manual i think it is one of the speaker detect errors.

its hard to say if there is any sound coming out during the movie because of all the other sound that is happening, but if there is, it is really faint.

i did run the test tones and sound does come out of the rear left and rear right speakers, so i eliminated a faulty wiring setup. So that's why I'm thinking it may be a setting i may have to turn on or adjust.

On your Onkyo, there is a 'Monitor out' or 'HMDI out' function that needs to be turned on. right now it is only setup to pass sound on, not to amplify it.

You don't, by any chance, have your PS3 set to output audio in 2.0 stereo only do you?

I think if he turns "HDMI out" on (or HDMI audio out) then he may lose audio altogether, cuz the AVR will try to pass the audio to the TV along with the video.

Under Settings scroll down to Audio Settings and then just set it up from there

just thought about it, would this make any difference, reading through the manual some more, i see that there is a "music" a "games" and a "movies" feature. I'll mess with that, just curious if the setting would really change anything

When you did the test tones it was the surround speakers not the surround back speakers, right? I was just wondering if you had the right surround connections for the speakers on the AVR.

Those just change EQ settings. It's sort of like the 'Rock, Jazz, Country' settings on your car radio.

You need to connect the surrounds to the SURR Speakers connections not the SURR Back Speakers connections.

Then re-run Audyssey.

Sound out of the surrounds when manually looking = progress.

When you go through what Moonphase suggested, click manual instead of auto. Then check everything except AAC. Since you don't have 7.1, don't check those either.

There you go.
SL and SR are the 2 that should be hooked up.

SBR = surround back right. you don't want that connected. its for 7.1

edit: Surround Left is blue. Surround Right is gray. do not connect anything to brown or tan
