Default Need Help Choosing a Standalone

I need Help Choosing a Stand Alone.. I have 500$ to spend. I dont have a nice sound system thats next.. But have a Samsung LN-40A650 and im looking for a New Standalone BD player.

I just want to know what is best for 500$ or less. I read the other thread "Whats the best Blu Player" but it just constant bickering back and forth about Tech. Sound stuff.

Thank you in advance.

You'll probably get as many different answers as there are different Blu-ray players. Personally, I'd check the Panasonic line-up. The new Oppo is also getting rave reviews since it is just starting to hit the street. The Oppo is selling for exactly what you have in coin ($499.00). Pannys can be had for less, but it all depends on what you want out of the unit. Good luck no matter what you choose!

I have a Panny DMP-BD35 which is no longer being sold but is a solid unit. I got on the Oppo train when I heard about what they were going to attempt and placed my name on their list to be one of the first to have one. Mine arrived on Saturday and it's a pretty impressive machine. I believe the Oppo will be ready for sale within a month, but haven't heard of any hard date yet. Their waiting list was longer than anyone (including Oppo) anticipated and they want to get the new players into the hands of the people who signed up for them first.

You really can't go wrong with either, but as far as PQ is concerned, they are all just about the same when it comes to BD. SDVDs on the Panny were decent, but the Oppo beats the Panny out in that respect. I should say that it looks better on my set which is also similiar to yours (Sammy LN52A-750).

You should have more people chime in soon. They won't steer you wrong.

Some of the active people really into audio and OPPO said that they believe the date is by the end of the month and possibly May 18th. I think this is a much better player than the Panny. I actually ordered the Panny BD55 which was canceled and replaced with the BD80 so I was waiting for that until I read the reviews and specs of the OPPO 83. I paid for the OPPO as I was on the online list via their website and expect to pick up the unit by Friday this week, I can not wait! I think this is a much better player than anything else and what others have said is that until you spend well over double the cost you can not get a player as good as the OPPO 83! It plays not only bluray but plays DVD better than other players, and plays SACD, DVDA, HDCD, MP3, etc.! I would say get the OPPO; you might enter your infor on the online form and maybe you will luck out and get it before the public release later this month?

I recommend a player that can both bit stream and decode the HD audio codecs. Depending on the type of receiver you may need analog outs on your player.

Questions to consider:

How important is BD Live?
How important is fast load times?
Will you purchase a receiver that can decode the HD Audio Codecs?
Do you plan on having a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup?
Will you update the firmware via cd, ethernet, or wireless?

Have it...and it matches your red toc (along with mine). Look at my ht gallery forum discussion. I have pics of the player and tv. I plan on wall mounting it below tv when I get my speaker bar. It works great...streams media from pc...netflix...pandora...divx....loads fast...and looks good.

Once you've had a chance to mess around with it, let us know what you think. I believe you're going to be amazed.
