Well, I've gotten the itch for an upgrade. I was going to try to save up for a 60" Kuro...the KRP that's going for around $3000, but reading the thread over at AVSforum I decided not to. There seems to be a lot of sets delivered cracked, and I just don't want to go through what could be a lengthy process of finally getting one intact. Besides, just seeing one broken set arrive would break my heart. I don't want to see any Kuro in ruin! I'm not sure any would be available by the time I get the money anyway. I started thinking that 50" was fine so long as I get a significant upgrade in picture quality.
After checking out the Hitachi P50X902 in Best Buy's Magnolia room next to a Panny 850u and a Pioneer Elite I walked away very impressed. The Hitachi looked much better than the Panny and very close to the Kuro. Blacks were extremely good and came as close as I've ever seen to the Kuro. It took a lot of scrutiny to tell the difference. Yes, the Kuro still has deeper blacks, but man was this set close. Where the black bars and the bezel ended was nearly undetectable. After research I found that P50V702 was nearly identical lacking just a handful of the menu adjustments. Apparently these sets are very accurate right out of the box and the adjustments really aren't needed. TigerDirect has this for $1200 shipped so I jumped on it. At a savings of about $800 over the 5020FD I think I got an excellent deal. I can't wait to get my new set! ![]() |

Congrats on the purchase. Supposedly the krp's have been the benficiary of new packaging due to all the cracked screens that have been showing up. I've had mine on order for about 2 weeks and they expect the new ones to arrive any day now.

Thanks to all of you! I'm really excited fellas. This is my second foray into plasma. I've only owned LCD's before I purchased my Panny just over a year ago. I don't ever want to go back unless something dramatically changes with the technology. They've come along way with black level, but the off axis viewing just kills me especially since I rarely sit in the middle of my sofa. LCD just isn't a go with me anymore. Once I get this set my Panny will go into the bedroom and my LG LCD will become a very large computer monitor. I'll update my gallery as soon as I get it all setup.

Well, here's another update....and its not good. After the status on the website was changed stating that the set was in the warehouse and my order was being processed I was notified via email the next day that it was on back order....again!
A call to TigerDirect wasn't any better. They had no ETA and aren't even sure that they will be getting more of these sets, so I canceled my order. I'm very disappointed. I should have known this was too good to be true. I'm disgusted that they would advertise something as being in stock and ready to ship when it clearly was not. The customer service guy I spoke with was a real @$$ too. To cope with my disappointment I decided to upgrade my front three speakers with THESE JBL towers and center channel which are scheduled to arrive Tuesday. Got all three brand new for $545 shipped. I guess I'll wait awhile and maybe by the end of the summer I'll upgrade my TV. I'm now leaning towards a Kuro...60" if possible, but I'll settle for a 50". A 54" Panny is also under consideration. Note: I posted this in another thread also since I mentioned the upgrade there also. |
