The PS3 was the only good choice for a Blu-ray player for the first year or two of the format's life, and it remains a good choice even today. For BD picture quality, I know of no reason to find fault with it. Some players will do a better job with standard DVD's, but there are also quite a few that won't do as good a job in that regard.
The only significant reasons I see to consider a standalone player instead of the PS3 are ambient noise (some PS3's generate a distracting amount of cooling fan noise), difficult integration with a universal remote, and a lack multichannel analog output. |

I came SO close to buying a standalone this weekend. I went to a nearby electrical store and had a good look at the Panasonic BD's 35, 55 & 60 Blu Ray players. They weren't expensive, I could have bought any of them without leaving too much of a hole in my wallet but after watching the movie being played on all three (Wall-E, which I have) I honestly couldn't see any notable improvements over the Playstation (or each of the Panasonic units against eachother to be honest!). Until something comes along which really BLOWS the PS3 away I'm sticking with it.
If only it wasn't so damn ugly though ![]() |

I'm using a PS3 as my only BD player and I'm very happy with it. PQ and AQ are both top-notch IMO. I remember reading about some player that came out that supposedly offer better PQ, but the improvement is minimal and the player is more than twice the price of a PS3.

PS3' ROCK! I Have 2 Ps 3's Yes Im A Gamer But Im A Movie Lover As Well Wouldnt Think Of Any Reason To Get A Stand Alone Against My Ps3's The Only Thing That Does Interest Me Is The Players From Denon Or Marantz And The Likes Which Include A Reon Chip Supposedly Making Even Blu Ray P/q Look Even Better But I Have No Experience 1st Hand And Dont Know If Its Justifiable To Spend 2k Or More On A Player For Just A Slight Improvement

Of course, I'll chime in and say that I like my stand-alone better than my PS3 mainly due to the fact that the stand-alone bitstreams and operates with my Harmony One.
![]() There's a lovefest for the PS3 that is still alive today and it stems back to the days that it was the only BD player that was worth getting. |

Why do you want a player to bitstream and pay extra to have a receiver that decodes all the codecs compared to a decoder and player in 1 for half the price? Maybe your just one of the people that like to be able to see the codecs on your receiver instead of just PCM so whatever.
