hi,
i just got a ps3 and this is my first experience with blu-ray. when i watch movies on the ps3, the quality of some scenes is not as clear as others. i see what looks like static or a sparkling effect. i've seen it so far in At World's End, Spidey 3, and Talladega Nights. Does anyone know what this is? do i have a defective ps3? i am hooking it to my tv using HDMI. my tv plays back in 1080p. i have tried several hdmi cables all to the same effect. i also had trouble getting the ps3 to recognize that my tv plays 1080p. it won't let me set it to 1080i either. i do not have any of these problems when i play a movie in hd-dvd hooked up the same way to the same tv. any help would be greatly appreciated! josh |

you are seeing the particles of silver halide in photographic film http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographic_film there is nothing wrong with the player, connections or display.

1. Have you gone into the PS3 BD/DVD settings to make sure that you've set the output of the PS3 to 1080p? 2. Does your TV automatically detect a 1080p signal or do you need to tell it what signal it should expect? 3. Is your PS3 connected directly to the TV via HDMI or are you going through a receiver? To be honest, your description of "static" and "sparkle" don't really help much, but if you can give a better description of the problem, maybe someone can help you. |

he said he tried other cables, so I would say you have the output settings on the PS3 setup incorrectly, b/c you said it won't let you select 1080i (which if your t.v. is 1080p you shouldn't even want to try to set it to 1080i) Go into the settings and have it automatically detect the settings..... see what that gets you. Also, what settings for calibration on your t.v. have you gone through???? Noise-reduction type stuff etc. should be turned off.

1. yes i checked the settings and i am outputting at 1080p/24
2. my tv automatically detects. when the movie starts the tv shows a litle box in the corner that says 1080/24. 3. ps3 is connected ddirectly to the tv using hdmi cables. i have tried a few cables and it happens with all of them. it's really hard to describe what i am seeing. the image goes from being completely crisp to a scene that looks significantly grainer. when the scene ends, or there's a cut, the image goes back to being super clear. for instance, in spidey 3 when they cut to the arial shot of harry's apt., it looks terrible. |

when i went to have it automatically detect settings, it will only detect 1080p, and 480p. the tv is pretty new so i haven't calibrated it yet or messed with the settings. do you really think changing settings on the tv would affect individual scenes in a movie? wouldn't it affect the entire movie?

If his TV is saying 1080/24 all these questions are redundant.
Basically, it sounds like grain. Every movie (or most) have scenes like this. The only way to be sure if its grain or not is to buy cars or ratatouille which are prestine prints. If you still see the problem, its somewhere in the hardware, if its not, then I suggest your just seeing grain. Grain is simply a result of HD, which shows the downfalls of film based content. |

And make sure you have absolutely all image enhancing options turned off. I was having problems with some funky looking PQ on my Samsung untill I went in and turned off everything and then used the basic brightness and color calibrations included in every Sony Blu-ray.
Edit: And also make sure you don't have it in "Game Mode" |

Joshfuld, have you checked that you Tv is 24P compliant. My Tv accepts 1080p signal but when I set to BD 24P, the picture degrades a little bit. I just switched off this setting. Ever since I have enjoyed my BDs more than ever

It's not the PS3, and it's not the HDMI cable, it's the film. Everything's okay with your setup. |

If you have the sharpness on your TV jacked up or any kind of DNR turned on, it could cause these issues as well . . . I know Spiderman 3 has a good bit of film grain in it though, but if it looks "sparkly" then I would say there's a setting off somewhere.

If I'm thinking of the shot you're talking about, I think this is actually a piece of stock footage . . . it's by far the worst shot in the movie, and I don't think is representative of film grain.

here are my settings:
contrast: 100 Brightness: 45 Sharpness: 75 Color: 55 Tint: G50/R50 Color Tone Normal i'm watching Dead Man's Chest and i'm still seeing some grain. maybe KingofGrills is right. maybe it's just the movie? |
