Default Motion interpolation aka Auto motion plus

I have a quick and simple question. I know motion interpolation is what gives blu-rays that too real its fake look, and in Samsung brands that is called auto motion and in Sony it has another name. Question is, what is that feature called in other major brands ( such as LG, Panasonic ) and does that feature come on 720p sets or just 1080p 120hz sets.

Sony calls it MotionFlow, LG calls it TruMotion, Toshiba calls it ClearFrame, Mitsubishi calls it Smooth120Hz, JVC calls it Clear Motion Drive. On plasmas its not a refresh rate persay, its subfield drive. Totally different concept

Sony= MotionFlow

LG= True Motion

Toshiba= ClearFrame

And yes, i've only seen the frame interpolation on 1080p sets myself, however Sony does offer the MotionFlow feature on some of its 60Hz sets.

and correct me if I'm wrong, but those features operate independent of the 120hz refresh rate and can be switched off/on...right?

Yes, and usually.

I thought I remembered hearing about a display where you couldn't turn the FI off, but I may be wrong.

thank you so much for all the great replies! Would any of you guys be able to give any 60hz models that use this technology? Thanks again.

The new Samsung models have adjusted their Auto Motion Plus interpolation capability even further.

They used to have "Off", "Low", "Medium", and "High" settings. Now, on the new models they have two catetories:
Judder reduction
Blur reduction
Each category has a sliding scale listed from 0 to 9. You can adjust either category to where you want so you can adjust it so you get no judder, minimal motion blur without the "soap opera effect" that many HD Enthusiasts dread.

Good stuff Samsung. I wish I could afford one of those new displays!

I used to dread it, but now i keep it on low most of the time. I'll sacrifice watching blus with the "window" effect for more lines of motion resolution any day.

Low works VERY well with minimal soap opera effect except on certain movies. I experimented with my buddy's Samsung with AMP when I was setting up his new Harmony550. The medium setting has pretty obvious SOE and the High setting had it bad AND serious interpolation artifacts (looked like the video was coming apart!) Low was the best...resolved motion very well, essentially eliminating blur with minimal SOE, so I would recommend the Low setting to anyone who was susceptable to LCD Blur.

lol, agree on that. i cant stand watching blus with the AMP on medium or high. high has waaaay too many artifacts. my cousin loves it though, he said he wants them to make it even more "fake" looking lol. i guess he wants an "extra high" mode

I like my AMP only because it's something different. It give the movie a new feel that you don't get without the AMP. I watch movies with it on and off all the time and to tell you the truth, if all you do is watch movies with the AMP on, you'll get used to it and it dosn't even seem like it's on.

I have been known to leave mine on low for long periods of time and I do forget it is on. That is until there is some good panning going on in a particular scene, then I'm like, "WTF, oh yeah, I gotta turn this thing off now." LOL!

I'm so use to it now on my A950 that when I watch someone else's tv it makes me think how good my tv really is. I'm a tv snob now.

As a matter of fact I have yet to see a better set and my buddy has a 60" Pioneer plasma elite ( that doesn't look anywhere near as good as mine IMHO).

Yeah, when i was watching my buddie's A650, I was like "why does his tv look so much better than mine does. Its like WAY better"

Then I remembered he had the Auto Motion Plus active and I felt better, because mine doesn't have it...so now I knew why his looked so much cleaner.

Of course, now that I've adjusted the color space on my set, I think mine has the edge. This is of course, until I go and adjust the color space on his, in which case his will spank mine again. Of course, he paid about $1200 more than I did, so his should look better than mine!

Wasn't there a thread sounding similar to this that didn't end so well? Oh well, might as well see which way this goes:

1) Measured numbers and stats, or
2) Pointless name calling and childlike insults.

I am taking bets.

Like I said IMHO, stats and insults aside it's all about one persons perception with their viewing experience.

In your opinion, how well does it handle motion vs judder vs the Soap Opera Effect?
