Default Firmware update question?

Hi All,

Just a quick question on firmware, would you recommend to always add new firmware to your bluray players even if your not experiencing problems?

I ask because i own the Denon 2500bt transport & new firmware has come out for it which states on the changelog that its to enable the bluray "casino" to play & also a few of the older bond movies etc now i wont be ever getting casino or any of the older bond movies, so would you suggest i still download the latest firmware or just leave it until i do have any kind of issues etc?

Any suggestions?

I always do the updates. sometimes they don;t list what they have done with the update..so it could add something that is important.

My default answer is yes since my BD player is networked and does it's own thing. Simply cutting out the middle man......me.

Default I wouldn't

I know I will get some comments on this - but my last firmware update to my Samsung Blu-ray player caused more issues than the previous version. When I called Samsung - they said "we don't recommend upgrading your firmware unless you need it" - so let the comments come "thats because samsung is horrible" - either way - I was able to downgrade by installing the old firmware and the issues I was having went away. My understanding is that Samsung is able to download old firmware - I wouldn't try it with other players unless you have heard of success doing so. Because of my experience - I will never downoload a new firmware until I absolutely need to because my movies arent playing. Just my thoughts.

for my panasonic bd-35 I always installed the updates as soon as they were available and will do the same with my Oppo.
The only time I ever had a problem was with my Samsung 5000 where it worked much better with the old firmware and like HD2blu did, I ended up installing an older firmware which "fixed" the problem but of course without the benefits of the newer firmware. I will say that player left a really bad taste in my mouth for samsung electronics.

I would say if you are unsure about it, wait a few days after it is released and check here or over at AVS to see if anyone is having problems with the update.

I see no need to fix what isn't broken, but then I've always updated my stuff when it's been available since sometimes there's an added feature or something like that included in it. Some new discs that don't play need an update on the player before they will work, I've heard.

Well thanks so far for the replies guy's , i see it divides opinion.

I must say that i think i'm in favour of only using firmware if i actually have a problem that does need correcting, as i believe in not fixing what isnt broken etc unless certain firmware states its for improving the players performance, like loading times and so on. I'd hate to update firmware & it causes more problems than before i did it, so i wont take the risk as ill wait until i know for sure i need it.

I never had a problem with updating my panasonic 30 or the 60. most of the time it did improvement stuff with the player.

samsung is a horrible company with bluray players. I heard nothing but problems. they do make some great tvs.
