Default Blu-ray and DTS?

Hey all, would first like to say hey to all of you here, and look forward to learning a pile from here. Second of all I am completely new to the blu ray scene. I have a 1080p plasma tv so I can utilize all blu ray has to offer. I have read the thread on which blu ray to buy but still am a little fuzzy on what to get. Does a stand alone blu ray player still reckognize the DTS format of regular dvd's, as I have a DTS Yamaha reciever that is about 7 years old? A friend of mine has the PS3 and his Harmon Kardon does not and only gets stereo out of his. Both of ours are hooked up with fibre-optic. Is it really that hard to do updates on a stand alone or easier on either that or a PS3? Im sure I will have many questions to follow but this is all that is on the tip of my tongue right now. Thanx!

Well if your Yamaha receiver accepts the toslink optical cable and decodes normal DTS from DVDs, Blu-ray players can output that through bit streaming, so check output specs on Players, etc.

Since Blu-ray Disc can do up to lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 sound, (plus LPCM and Dolby TrueHD formats), in this forum, when they talk about that original DTS format they usually refer to normal DTS as "DTS core" or "DTS 1.5 Mb/s", etc.

There's also lots of more info at our Audio Forum like the first sticky at the top etc
