I'm looking into getting a Blu-Ray player and am thinking about getting a PS3. I noticed there is a analog cable output, HDMI output, and toslink output.
Would I be able to use the HDMI to my tv, analog to have stereo sound to my speakers, and toslink to my headphones all work at the same time? (I ask because I have my 360 connected like this: VGA to tv, toslink to headphones, and analog audio to stereo all work at the same time so that I can just turn off/on one audio source and use another with no hassle; or both) The difference is that I game/movies through my headphones alone but use the stereo when there is company. Another question. I was looking at the Blu-Ray Game Discs and noticed they all (most of them at least) say Dolby Digital on the back. Whats the best sound format available on the games? Appreciate the help! |

Yes, with the new firmware, all sound outputs will work at the same time. However, there is a drawback. Whichever is your main source of audio, which I'm guessing will be your headphones, you will be able to output 5.1 channels of sound over TOSLink. Whichever outputs you are using as secondary sources will only output stereo sound (including HDMI).
You could use HDMI to get 7.1 channels of sound, but then your optical out would only give you stereo. Basically, your primary output can be used to its full potential and then the other two secondary outputs will only give you stereo. Dolby Digital does sound good, but certain games also give you the option of LPCM tracks. Take Uncharted for example. You have the option of Dolby 5.1, PCM 5.1, or PCM 7.1, etc. Most games only have a Dolby Digital track, though, so don't expect every game to have those options. Appreciate the help SlmShdy1.
The headphones would be my primary. The Stereo is only 2 channels. Left & Right. No sub, no center. Since the stereo reciever doesn't do any decoding (I think) can it play HD audio through 2 analog audio cables? Or does HD audio on a 2 channel system not exist? (Ya, I've been wanting a blu-ray player and am unsure if I want another gaming platform [most of my current platform's games are exclusives]. Apparently the sound quality will be equivelent except for my current console doesn't do 7.1 [not that I have the ability to use it anyway], that and I'm not sure if any of the games are native 1080p that claim to be, however I did see that many PS3 games highest output is 1080i/720p (which is the best my tv can do anyway)). |
