I've got the PS3 and my setup right now is HDMI to TV for video and optical out to receiver for Audio. My question is this: Does HDMI offer more than optical as far as audio quality and/or choices? In other words, should I buy a new receiver with HDMI or does it not offer anything above and beyond optical?
Thanks in advance for any input. |

Use the search function, as it should help you out more. In short, though, yes. Optical out cannot output any of the lossless audio, aside from 2.1. So all the PCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTSHD-MA encodes need either analog outs or HDMI (no analog outs on PS3, so you need HDMI). The bit-rates through HDMI also get higher, as you would expect, so there will be an increase in quality.
Go to your PS3's audio setup menu and see what you can select with optical out set and then with HDMI out set. As for should you upgrade? As I said, it does offer more, but use the search function to see if people say the upgrade is worth it in their opinion, some people may not feel the quality is improved enough to justify the cost. |

I found a reasonably priced HDMI receiver (does audio and video with 2 HDMI in and one out)... it's the Sony STR-DG710 and it's only $219 + $23 shipping at J&R Music. Crutchfield has it for $279 w/free shipping. So J&R is cheapest price I could find. Heck, for under $250, to get HDMI inputs, I can now run my cable box AND my PS3 thru HDMI. (I know it's not 1.3, but for the money, I'm OK with that)... my TV only has ONE HDMI input so I've been running HD cable through Component (which isn't a slouch) but it'll be nice to streamline those cords!!!

Dolby TrueHD is automatically decoded in the PS3 and then is transmitted over HDMI as PCM. So basically if you want the HD audio, all you need is a receiver that can accept multi-channel PCM over HDMI. However, one thing worth noting. There is no DTS MA decoding for the PS3 nor is there a way to transmit that audio track over HDMI. So if in the future the PS3 has the ability to decode it onboard then it will probably transmit it over PCM as well. If it in the future has the ability to transmit the DTS MA track over HDMI you would need a receiver and a v1.3 compliant HDMI cable to transmit and decode it from the PS3.

Question 1: Does any one know if future generations of PS3's will have HDMI 1.3 input?
2. This may be a stupid question but are there 2 models of the PS3? One with only an HDMI jack and another with an HDMI jack and analog outputs? Can you send me the answer to my private in box as well as posting it. |

I was just given a PS3 and I am experiencing loud audio feedback through my receiver when I plug it in. I am using the AV cable that came in the box and my tuner is a pioneer VSX 711. I has an audio input but I haven't had success in using it. It has the Multi colored inputs for DVD also, sorry I don't know what they are called. Should I try a new cable or are there settings on the PS3 that I need to change. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I forgot to specify optical audio input is what I have had no success in using.

If you mean you're using the cable that came with the PS3, it's an analog cable and you should set the PS3 to use analog outs. The cable should be connected to analog inputs on the Pioneer. If you mean you're using an optical cable that you got with the Pioneer, then disregard that comment. Just make sure you change the PS3 audio options to use optical.
Also, this thread might be helpful. It discusses all the different types of connections: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=32976 |
