GENESIS boxed set 1970-1974

I've been a Genesis fan since the 70s. I got turned on to them a little too late to see them with Peter Gabriel but their albums with him are still some of the best prog-rock out there. I've bought their albums in many formats over the years, but now, I feel i have the best one of all. The latest boxed set covering "the Gabriel years" is very very good sounding, and while 96khz DTS Surround is the best you can get there, it is a far cry better than most of the CD releases. Some may or may not like what they did with the Surround. It's like you're sitting in the middle of the band. But I like it!

And better still are the "extras" included on each disk. Concert footage with Peter at the front!! Yeah those tracks are in mono and not the best fidelity, but after all these years, finally getting to see these performances is a treat beyond belief for me. Best $100 I've ever spent.

I lost interest in Genesis after Steve Hackett left and their music became more pop-schlock than prog-rock. But if you like the early years this is a great set to have.

I saw them in Baton Rouge in 1978 just after Steve Hackett left. It was promoting the And Then There Were Three lp. Amazingly only about 1500 people showed up. They were amazing that night. Kinda like a we're gonna show you what you missed. I have everything they've ever done up to Duke. After that they really lost me.

Incidently, I have Hackett's solo release Voyage of the Acolyte on lp. Worth picking up if you can find a copy.

BTW, best concert ever - Yes in the round 1978. Was able to sit on stage. Still get goose bumps thinking about it.

Yes is my favorite band; didn't see them in 1978, but have seen them in various forms about 5 times including as ABWH (at Madison Square Garden), for the 90125 tour (either at Madison Square Garden or the Meadowlands); the Union Tour (at the Meadowlands); and I believe 2 other times at the Meadowlands, and I think at Nassau Coliseum (as I recall at least one if not both times with Wakeman on Keyboards).

Genesis is also a favorite, but only saw them once; I think that it may been the Seconds Out tour because as I recall Bill Bruford was on drums. I am not sure of the venue, but I think that it may have been the Beacon Theater.

Anybody who's a fan of Yes is a bud of mine. Totally awesome. I saw in another post that you're waiting on an original version of Close to the Edge. That is one terrific LP! Hope it's delivered as promised.

I have now gotten several copies of quite a number of Yes LPs adding to my already owned copies to find great sounding copies. I ended up getting an early original UK pressing, another original UK pressing, and an original US pressing of Close to the Edge. I also picked up 4 copies of Fragile: including 1 original early UK pressing (Plum label), an original UK pressing released in Germany (Plum label), and a couple of original US pressings. I picked up a UK early original pressing of The Yes Album (Plum label) as well as an expensive Hot Stamper US copy of the album from Better Records.

Picked up the following as well: early and original UK pressings of Yessongs, Tales From Topographic Oceans and Yesterdays. Picked up the original UK pressings of Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Finally, I also picked up a good sounding copy of Steve Howe's The Steve Howe Album.

Now I am just waiting until April 25 for the installation of the Turntable.

Fred, I was at that Genesis concert also in BR, first Friday in October. They had become my favorite band a year earlier and was really pumped to see them. Absolute best concert I've ever seen. We were right up there around the fourth row. The sound was the best I'd ever heard as it was in stereo and not the usual setup with the whole band blasting out of each wall of speakers. The only concert comparable sound wise was the Floyd a year earlier at the Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, which was in QUAD!

Are you referring to the Yes concert in BR? I saw them in '79 with the round stage revolving around at the Centroplex, I believe it is called (same place as the Genesis concert). That was a great one.

YES! The Euro and Japanese versions have SACD disks with the dvd dts disks. There is a difference in sound quality between the dts and sacd disks for sure. Very impressive sound with such really old recordings.

Well, I really didn't want to spend this much money, but this SACD NTSC DVD box set (1970 - 1975) has gotten so difficult to find that I purchased the last one available from an eBay seller in Hong Kong. With this purchase, I will have the complete 3 box set Genesis collection since I already had the 1st 2 box set releases that I had purchased last year.

I would have thought you might track down the vinyl box set release of this one too...as it's the only one of the three released on vinyl.

I had the first two NTSC SACD R0 boxsets but ended up selling them as I realized I probably wouldn't listen to the material enough...it was more the format that made me buy them. I will pick up Invisible Touch and Duke on single SACD releases though, they seem easy enough to find.

Hi Steve,

I have 16 Genesis albums on vinyl already purchased in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Many of them are unopened and in all likelihood many of the earlier albums are reissues. So, for me, I wanted them on SACD with the option to listen in both 2 channel and multichannel along with the DVDs.

Missed your post for some reason. Yes, the '79 Yes tour was called "In the Round" and I saw it at the Centroplex same as you. The most recent studio release for the tour was the Going For The One album although I seem to think that lp had been released nearly a year before that concert. I remember a friend of my sisters conned some sap security guard into letting us sit in front of the front row. (God knows what she promised him! ) I had brought my Yashika 35mm SLR to the concert and took like 5 rolls of really great pictures. Next to the Genesis concert earlier it was like the next best show I'd ever seen. After the show we all went to some bar that was right around the corner and got totally wrecked. How I managed to drive back to New Orleans that night and live to tell about it I have no earthly idea. Ah, the indescretions of youth!

Hi Fred, you said it - "youth". ANd also a lot more lenient drunken driving policy back then. Can't count how many times we did the midnight drives back to NOLA after a concert in BR. Hey, have you seen that the next Genesis box set is coming out next month? It's the live versions. Regretfully it'll only be DTS - no SACD and a few will only be stereo. The one I really want is Seconds Out. So, think I'm gonna pass on the box set and just get the one disk. Can't understand why they bugged on first on the "When in Rome" blu-ray and now dumping SACD.
