Default PS3 Sound

When playing games I have only Multi Channel in. I have it hooked through HDMI to Denon 2309. I checked and the PS3 settings look like it should play other formats. I am sure this has been covered so sorry for any repeats. I am playing Bad Company and it says it has Dolby Digital but it does not show on my reciever. thanks

The PS3 does the audio decoding internally. I have a denon 3808 and mine says the same thing. It will display the same thing for dvd's, blu ray's, and games. I think the Slim is the only PS that actually bitstreams out the audio via HDMI to allow for the receiver to do the decoding which will then display, Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-MA.

The only game I have seen bitstream sound was Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

The options menu allows you to select LPCM, DTS 5.1, DD 5.1 Stereo, mono.

I've not seen another that does this, all others decode and send LPCM.

You should be able to download the demo of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune from PSN if you want to put your mind at ease.

I have the slim also but it is upstairs on a non surround sound system. I think all you should have to is go to Video Settings and then BD/DVD audio output format (HDMI) and select "Bitstream." I'm not entirely sure if this setting affect video games. Now you have me curious. I will probably bring my slim downstairs and try this out. Hopefully someone will be able to give a definitive answer sooner.

Thanks for the help. I have a stand alone Blu for playing movies. I was just seein about games. I do thank you all for your info. I will play around with it later and see what happens. But football has the priority today. If I come up with anything I will let you know.

As Basshead mentioned, you have to enable bitstream for HDMI output format.

Also double check your sound settings:
Settings -> Sound Settings ->Audio Output Settings -> HDMI, either run the 'Automatic' option, or do it manually.

Make sure all the formats your receiver can decode are listed in here, you'll see Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio in the list of output formats, they need to be checked as well. If a format is unchecked in this list, the PS3 will send them via LPCM instead of bit streaming since it assumes your receiver can't handle the format in question.

I'm using a Yamaha RXV-1900, the PS3 slim outputs DTS-MA and Dolby TrueHD in Blu-rays, so I assume if a game appeared that supported a bit stream format, it would output as well.
