Default PS3 sound

? the only sound format that the ps3 has is dts 5.1 and pcm 5.1 is this true?? I was looking at recievers with dtshd and all the other hd sound formats but isn't that pointless to buy if you are using a ps3? also does the 40gig PS3 have all the same specs as the 60gig?

The PS3 currently (emphasis on this word) does not decode DTS HD High Resolution or DTS HD Master Audio audio tracks. It will process such audio tracks and strip out the core 1.5Mbps DTS Core track, which is still pretty good.

The PS3 correctly handles PCM up to 7.1 and Dolby TrueHD.

In all cases, the audio is output as PCM over HDMI (best results). Otherwise it will downmix to DD 5.1 or PCM 2.0 over optical.

I mentioned the word "currently" because the expectation is that once some standalone players hit the market that can handle DTS-MA decoding natively, Sony will unleash the firmware update that will also allow the PS3 to handle the two codecs mentioned above it currently only partially supports.

The PS3 will bitstream out everything but Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD over the HDMI. Buying a receiver with TrueHD and DTS-HD processing will not net you anything with the PS3 as the source. Most people I've met or read with a receiver capable HDMI audio input select PCM out on the PS3 which configures internal digital audio processing and outputs only PCM to the receiver.

If you have a good enough HDMI receiver, you should bitstream out the audio on all tracks, except the TrueHD (which the PS3 has to be set to LPCM to hear the correct track). A good quality receiver will place a better soundfield on the tracks. Plus, when dealing with DTS-ES, the PS3 will not decode that 6th channel, only 5. You do lose something in some tracks when you let the PS3 do the decoding. The receiver has more dedicated circuitry to decode and spread out the audio properly than the PS3.

As for your other question the 40gb. ps3 will not be backwards compatible, it will not have a card reader, it will only have 2 usb ports, and like you said a smaller hard drive. I hear it's expected to hit the us market november 2nd. Frankly i think that this would be a better choice for people who are looking to get into next gen as for not playing ps2 games you know that they still have their ps2 console on hand

I have not heard such a thing. Could you provide a credible source?

The PS3 cannot output hi-definition Bitstream audio currently due to limitations in it's hardware from what I understand. You should use PCM out if you are using an HDMI interface.

Play any DVD (Pan's Labyrinth) or BD (Punisher) on your PS3 that has a DTS-ES track. If the PS3 decodes the track and sends it out as PCM, it is in a 5.1, not 6.1 like the track truly has.

Your correct, that is what I said in the first 2 lines. But sometimes, you will lose audio, if you do not bitstream out the tracks to an HDMI capable receiver.

Right, and it is very easy to switch between PCM and Bitstream on the fly, glad they have that nice little feature.

I think you're right! Looking on the side (or top if you have it standing up) of the PS3 it does not say DTS-ES...just DTS. Therefore, you have to go select bitstream to get the back center channel (fully 6.1). That will work.

Guitar Hero and Rockband's guitar controllers will be wireless but not Bluetooth. So these controllers will be using USB dongles as the signal receiver. One dongle per controller.

If you have only two USB ports, you need to get a powered USB hub to plug in all of your USB needs. Having four ports minimize such needs. Of course, you can still plug in a four-port-USB hub per USB port.

Hi there.

What do you mean ?

Is there another way than to go to the "Settings / BD/DVD Settings / BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) / Linear PCM or Bitstream" ?

Thanks.

I read about GH3 using a dongle for wireless but where did you hear that Rock Band would be using a dongle as well?

No, especially if you care about multichannel sound, like you apparently do:

The 40GB version lacks SACD playback that all earlier PS3 versions do have.
