Default Disney animated classics on blu

Hello all.

I am relatively new to Blu and am a really big fan of Pixar films. I have not been much of a Disney movie collector just for the sake of collecting them in the past because it always seemed like I couldn't find the movies, I didn't care about the movies, or they were priced out of the range I considered to be reasonable.

Anyway, with the recent transistion to blu I happen to feel rather fortunate to have discovered that there are some really great deals to be found on Disney blu-ray titles if you just look around.

This leads me to the point of this post. I have decided to try to collect all the Disney animated classics on blu. I think I jumped in at about the right time and I am really hoping that nothing has been thrown into the vault already (thus defeating my collection before it gets started...lol)

Does anyone have a list of what Disney animated classics are/were available on blu?

Have any of them been thrown into the vault already?

Is there a specific series name for these releases?
The reason I ask is because I have some confusion regarding this. In the days of dvd I thought the platinum series was the "collector" series, for those who collect all the disney movies. These seemed to be the super cleaned up editions with awesome audio tracks, ect...Then there were some Disney films released under some other edition title altogether. I am pretty sure Alice in Wonderland was one like that. Perhaps even more. I am not sure. Then I was curious about Aladdin (the best non-Pixar Disney movie ever) as I think I read on this forum somewhere that it's not even going to be released on blu?

Sorry for the long post. I am just curious about this as I would like to get my collection started.

The only classics that have become available are Sleeping Beauty, Pinochio, and Snow White. All are currently at retail.

Edit: Here's a list representing the official "Masterpiece" movies created by Disney:

1. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
2. Pinocchio
3. Fantasia
4. Dumbo
5. Bambi
6. Saludos Amigos
7. The Three Caballeros
8. Make Mine Music
9. Fun And Fancy Free
10. Melody Time
11. The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad
12. Cinderella
13. Alice In Wonderland
14. Peter Pan
15. Lady And The Tramp
16. Sleeping Beauty
17. 101 Dalmatians
18. The Sword In The Stone
19. The Jungle Book
20. The Aristocats
21. Robin Hood
22. The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh
23. The Rescuers
24. The Fox And The Hound
25. The Black Cauldron
26. The Great Mouse Detective
27. Oliver & Company
28. The Little Mermaid
29. The Rescuers Down Under
30. Beauty And The Beast
31. Aladdin
32. The Lion King
33. Pocahontas
34. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
35. Hercules
36. Mulan
37. Tarzan
38. Fantasia/2000
39. The Emperor's New Groove
40. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
41. Lilo And Stitch
42. Treasure Planet
43. Brother Bear
44. Home On The Range

I would say that less then a third of those are Masterpieces, and I can't see myself buying more then half of those. That said, Disney has started with 3 very strong movies for blu...

Most of those are not considered as Disney "Classics" (or "Masterpieces" as defined by Disney...

Yeah you are actualling jumping in at the exact right time as far as disney blus are concerned. I find them a real treat to watch personally. I think sleeping beuty is simple astounding to look at, colors are rich and vibrant and the sound is just great as well. You are also getting in just before the big movie push in 2010. There are a few films coming out in 2010 from disney..

Dumbo in febuary
fantasia/fantasia 2000 in spring
beauty and the beast in the fall

Google, cut+paste. Took me about 15 seconds. I remembered that list from a similar thread months ago. I bought a few of the "Masterpieces" on that list back in the VHS days (some I had never even heard of at the time). So, I will be more prudent in my purchasing choices this time. But, so far, everything I have heard that has/will be released on blu is a true classic.

Not that anyone cares, but here's my list of the Disney Masterpeices I will buy eventually on Blu:

1. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs
2. Pinocchio
3. Fantasia
4. Dumbo
5. Bambi

6. Saludos Amigos
7. The Three Caballeros
8. Make Mine Music
9. Fun And Fancy Free
10. Melody Time
11. The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad
12. Cinderella
13. Alice In Wonderland
14. Peter Pan
15. Lady And The Tramp
16. Sleeping Beauty
17. 101 Dalmatians

18. The Sword In The Stone
19. The Jungle Book
20. The Aristocats ???
21. Robin Hood ???
22. The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh
23. The Rescuers ???
24. The Fox And The Hound
25. The Black Cauldron
26. The Great Mouse Detective
27. Oliver & Company
28. The Little Mermaid
29. The Rescuers Down Under
30. Beauty And The Beast
31. Aladdin
32. The Lion King
33. Pocahontas
34. The Hunchback Of Notre Dame

35. Hercules ???
36. Mulan ???
37. Tarzan ???
38. Fantasia/2000
39. The Emperor's New Groove
40. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
41. Lilo And Stitch
42. Treasure Planet
43. Brother Bear
44. Home On The Range

So, 19 for sure, and likely another 6.

As for Pixar films-released it and I will buy it on release day.

The ones released thus far on blu-ray are nothing short of fantastic. I missed out on tons of them on dvd as they went into the vault before I ever got them so I'm delighted to be able to start at the beginning of the releases now with blu-ray. Not only that but it is even more special collecting them now since I have a daughter who is 2 and she looooves Snow White and the other Disney princesses as well.

You are confused by Disney's marketing from the 90's during the heyday of VHS when every film was branded as "Disney's (insert number here) animated masterpiece." They have since abandoned labeling these films that way. The real list you need to look at are the animated films made by Walt Disney Animation Studios (formerly Walt Disney Feature Animation). The list of features made are:

1.) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
2.) Pinocchio
3.) Fantasia
4.) Dumbo
5.) Bambi
6.) The Three Caballeros
7.) Saludos Amigos
8.) Make Mine Music
9.) Fun and Fancy Free
10.) Melody Time
11.) The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
12.) Cinderella
13.) Alice in Wonderland
14.) Peter Pan
15.) Lady and the Tramp
16.) Sleeping Beauty
17.) One Hundred and One Dalmatians
18.) The Sword in the Stone
19.) The Jungle Book (last film made while Walt Disney was alive)
20.) The Aristocats
21.) Robin Hood
22.) The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
23.) The Rescuers
24.) The Fox and the Hound
25.) The Black Cauldron
26.) The Great Mouse Detective
27.) Oliver & Company
28.) The Little Mermaid
29.) The Rescuers Down Under

43.) Treasure Planet
44.) Brother Bear
45.) Home on the Range
46.) Chicken Little
47.) Meet the Robinsons
48.) Bolt
49.) The Princess and the Frog
50.) Rapunzel (December 2010)

That is the official list that is found in the Disney Encyclopedia and that is what collectors go by. So far they have released Snow White, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Dinosaur, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt on Blu-Ray. Sleeping Beauty is being discontinued in January when it returns to the "vault."

To add to the confusion, Dinosaur wasn't made by the Walt Disney Feature Animation department. It was added for some reason to the canon (probably to make Rapunzel the fiftieth Animated Classic).

I don't get the "vault" thing, they spend good $ to restore a film, then they pull out out of production after a certain time period? It WAS a great idea back in the day when there was no VCR's,DVD and Blu-ray players, and people went to see it in the theater, and they would re-release it for whole new generation, but now it kinda makes no sense, Disney could make so much more $ if they kept the films "in print"!

I was confused by this at first, but then I did some research. Disney merged 2 segments of WDFA to form The Secret Lab, which is who made Dinosaur. But The Secret Lab was still a part of WDFA. I think they didn't include it at first since Dinosaur isn't 100% animated (many of the backgrounds are live action). But it makes sense to count it as an animated film since all of the characters are animated and since most of the live action backgrounds are really composites of multiple shots to create the world.

The whole "vault" practice is done to create more demand than there would otherwise be. They only really apply it to the Platinum/Diamond titles, which are all on a 7 year rotation. Every 7 years, they re-release them with a new banner, new restoration, and new bonus features. They hype up the fact that it will only be available for "a limited time" and they sell like hot cakes. They usually keep them in print for 1-2 years. They usually rank among the highest selling films of the year and 7 years later, Disney can do it again.

They use the "vault" marketing angle on films that they don't really vault as well. Take Dumbo, for instance. The recent trailer for the Blu-Ray release shows the mouse-shaped vault opening as if Dumbo hasn't been available for a long time. But it was last released in 2007 and that edition remained in print until June 2009, when it was quietly discontinued (without any advertising that it was going away). My local Best Buy still has copies of it, which Disney will probably recall as it gets closer to the new release. Is there actually a lot of demand for a new DVD release of Dumbo? No, but marketing it as if it's been unavailable for a long time will make people think there is and you can bet that they will get it to ensure that their kids don't miss out on having Dumbo as part of their childhood. The addition of an extra disc will be enough for fans of the movie to re-buy the same film they bought two years ago. I'm just grateful that they are releasing it on Blu-Ray, since their other rereleases lately have been DVD-only (Oliver & Compamy, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Mary Poppins, Pete's Dragon). Disney also has more DVD-only rereleases in store for the first half of 2010 (The Black Cauldron and The Great Mouse Detective). I can't wait for the day where all of their rereleases are also on Blu-Ray.

The wording of your post is a little confusing, because you make it sound like his list was way off, when really the only difference was that he left Dinosaur off.

So what's the big deal about the way Disney used to label the movies, if the lists are pretty much identical?

Oh, okay. It also doesn't really help Dinosaur at first wasn't included, and a couple of years after the release it suddenly was. But it's good to know it technically was made by WDFA after all. And even though Dinosaur itself is a flawed film, the process of using existing backgrounds and animated characters really gave it an epic look, I think. The movie itself would've been better if the animals didn't speak in it, but that's another matter.

Well, that and the other five titles after "Home on the Range" to be fair.
