No Robin, WINDOWS explorer, the tool the computer uses to look at itself. The only recommendation I had was reboot, the next one is have an expert take a look at it.

I gathered that... but I wanted to make sure since so many people use the two terms interchangably.

OP.... If you have an external drive that you use for storing your important data... formatting isn't near the hassle it used to be. If not.... now is a fine time to invest in one and move your data over.

Yeah, I saw in this week's Best Buy ad a Seagate 1 TB External Harddrive for $110 which is pretty damn good if you ask me.

Sounds like a damaged operating system. Copy all your important data as soon as you can!

It's hard to say that unequivocally at this point, but if your Windows Explorer is consistently crashing and you've already swept your computer for spyware and viruses, that would be my best guess as to what to do next. You rarely see a computer revived after something like that. Not to say that it's not possible, though. A format and reinstall is pretty painless if you've got all your drivers, program file installers, and a good internet connection.

When I used Microsoft Operating Systems, I did that often.

If you restart regularly and nuke and pave once and a while... You should be fine.

Yeah. If you guys have noticed, I've been offline lately. It's because the OS/Hard Drive had failed on my P.O.S. Toshiba laptop. Best advice is to get an external hard drive. I have a 500 GB one and I keep all my screenplays, music, iTunes purchases, and etc all on there. You can get a nice sized one for $110.

Yeah,

I bought an external hard drive and back up data weekly.

They are pretty cheap these days and hardware failures happen.

I know people who go a step further and have a backup located away from their home as well. Like I had a friend that would mail DVDs of her photos to her mom so they were at another physical location.

In a way... I sort of have that because many of out pictures have been printed by shutterfly and they keep a copy of everything.

I was just thinking about this situation a little bit on the way home from work. Have you resolved this yet?

One thing I was thinking you could do is boot into Safe Mode and then go to your Control Panel and remove any suspicious programs. Of course you could remove them all in one fell swoop, or you could do it true troubleshoot style and remove one at a time then restart (and repeat as necessary) until the problem goes away. Once it does, then you've likely nailed the culprit.

If you do get your system running healthy again after that procedure, run another full or deep scan on your entire system with Spybot, Avira, Lavasoft, and/or any other similar program you might have. I would also just for fun clear your temporary internet files, all temporary files, and all that other crap you don't need that Windows like to dump in various folders. Do that before the system scan. Then after that, defrag the disk, because your hard drive will likely be fragmented to heck and back and will need to be sorted.

Are you serious?! Well now I would say it's a hardware problem somewhere. Perhaps bad RAM. I suppose it could be a bad hard drive, too. Actually there are a lot of things it could be. Does it have an add-on video card?
