Default Converting Hard Drive to FAT32

Hi all,

My friend has an external Seagate hard drive and wants to connect it to his PS3, but it needs to be changed To FAT32.

We know how to do this, but just as I'm about to make the change a warning comes up saying it will delete contents.

My question is, is this warning simply refferring to the "partitions" that it will delete? Or is it saying that it will delete all the contents of my hard drive? ie video music etc

Cheers!

Formatting will definitely delete ANY data that's on the hard drive, you need to move it to another spot before formatting and then move it back afterwards

Don't REALLY need to have any specific folders set up as long as you press triangle on the drive when it's connected to the PS3 and select "display all" I think that's what it says...and then it just shows ALL the files on the drive instead of ones specifically in a video or photo folder.

You can partition the drive, and only use that partition as Fat 32, or you can do the whole drive.. If its 500gb or less use SwissKnife if its bigger, you have to to use a diff program and I'll have to find a link for it.

For Partitions use Easeus Partition Master Home Edition (its free).

Cheers Cali.. so are you saying i can decide what percentage of the drive is FAT32 and what percentage isnt? to back up all the contents the percentage that isnt would have to be sufficient to store the data that needs to backed up? prob better off transferring the data elsewhere and formatting the entire drive

Use the backup function on the PS3 system for everything except movies, those have to be selected by pressing triangle and selecting backup (not sure about the videos, but the backup utility will do everything else for you...)

If I plug an external HDD (converted to FAT32) into a PS3 USB slot, will it recognize that connection? Or do I need to do something else?

Hi John!

It will recognise it straight away. If you are looking to take music, video or photos off the HDD, you go to the music, video or photo menu on your PS3 and click on the external device that has been detected!

Hi Gar!

That's great! I'm basically looking to have music files only. I have about 7,500 songs on this HDD with no structure. Should I organize the files into sub-categories first? Or can I do that from within the PS3? Any suggestions?

John

You know, that is the one thing I don’t like on the PS3. I think organising photos and songs are quite difficult. For example, if I was to transfer over 500 photos from a digital camera, I would have to manually rename each photo by editing the album name on the photo and then on each photo after that that I want in the same album. So if wanted to put 100 photos from my holidays in to a folder called "Holiday" I would have to manually rename each photo to make sure that it's album name is "Holiday". Then, all the photos that have the album title "Holiday" will group together. There is no drag and drop feature as such. This is the only way to organise what is on the hard drive if you don’t organise before transferring. (if I am wrong someone please tell me as I would love to know!)

I would recommend creating folders for your music BEFORE transferring

Music - Albums - Album Name

That way, when transferred to the PS3, you will see that format (folder names too) on your PS3 hard drive. It will be neat and tidy instead of having thousands of "loose" tracks. Might take a while, but worth it. If you already have them in folders then they will transfer very well!

^^^ Thx Gar!

Looks like I have my work cut out for me then, but it sounds like a worthwhile exercise. I've been using MediaMonkey for many years and because of its functionality I never felt the need to organize music files within the MY MUSIC folder on my PC.

Looks like I now have a project to complete on my days off! Thx for the workload buddy!

Hehe sorry!

It might not be so bad. On my laptop I have my music broken down in to folders

Music - Artist - Album name - **mp3s**

If you have something similar set up, all you have to do is copy the Music folder and all the sub folders will copy too. And once transferred on to the PS3 all the folders will be visible. If you are NOT already organised then yes, you have a bit of work to do!

The other option of course is just leaving everything on your pc/laptop and stream to the PS3?

It's really not as bad as I made it out to be, but it's still going to be a significant task. I don't mind though. A couple of hours work and it'll be done!

That's not so bad so! Put on your favourite music to listen to and you will fly through it! Let me know how it all looks when you get it over to the PS3!

Is it possible to put game installs on the external HD? My 60GB is full and Flower and Quest for Booty are the only thing on my HD except for game installs and normal updates. Will the external HD act as an automatic extension for downloading updates to games?
