Title says it all.
It seems as though Sony has given away the game console market while trying to "get" the next gen DVD market. What do you guys think? |

Sony has always tried to be one step ahead. They promoted CDs with the PS1 and DVDs with the PS2. Now they can promote Blu-ray as well.

I strongly believe that once the Blu-ray market is settled hopefully in the next 90 days you will see them concentrate all they're efforts into the gaming aspects of the PS3.
Thus making the PS3 one of the most advance piece of technology that was behind one of the most brilliant marketing schemes. |

I don't think Sony has to choose and is very capable of being great at both.
They may have lost some ground short-term in gaming due to the PS3 being too expensive (due to the inclusion of Blu-ray) for a mainstream audience but I think it's evident they are taking steps to rectify that. They now have a machine that plays the best in high-definition movies as well as having quite a few great games out this holiday season. Don't forget, this is only the very beginning of the PS3's second year on the market. The 360 wasn't exactly chewing up the charts its first year either. I feel the strategy Sony has employed will prevail in the long-term. Only time will tell for sure. |

![]() i don't think you are seeing the long term effects of putting a blu-ray drive into the ps3. you obviously see the short term effect of it winning the war for blu-ray, however after that i think you are failing to see sony's vision. once blu-ray wins, the ps3s value goes up, it has the guarenteed next gen-media format, so a lot of people go out and buy ps3s as they are not early adopters of either console games or home media, but certainly are fans of games and movies and the ps3 is the only console that offers both of these. now remember xbox 360 games are limited to 9GB, while PS3 can have games of 50GB and possible 100GB. Devs are already running into space limitations with the xbox 360, so in the future (well, its already happening now), who do you think is going to have the bigger, better, games? the ps3 will. so you can get a ps3 with the best games out and a blu-ray player for nearly the same price that you can get a 360 with inferior games and just a dvd player in it, what are you going to get? the ps3 of course. in fact, its already happening outside the US, the 360 is getting pummeled by the ps3. the ps3 is going to have a very long successful life. as far as does sony care about HDM or gamers. well, they have fired up their 1st party studios to produce more 1st party exclusive games than ms or nintendo combined in the next year, what does that say about their dedication to gaming? and they continue to tout blu-ray as superior and produce great transfers and have a fairly large amount of releases. what does that tell you about their commitment to HDM? |

yeah its not like sony is chosing one or the other.
people have to understand that corportaions like sony are Immensly HUGE. while we as a single person cant seem to understand that a company can have completely different agenda's within itself it does happen. for example everyone seems to think toshiba and sony hate each other. but in terms of corporate partnerships their very very close. With alot invested in each other *cell processor was a huuuuge investment from both* There is a big part of sony pushing blu-ray and there is a huge part of sony pushing the gaming division. in fact these 2 sectors may never really meet. Once the hardware was finalized, they probably went their own way for the most part. and both sides pushing their own agenda to the fullest |

It's a false question to start with.
Does MS care about Windows users or Office users? |

I can assure you they haven't given away the gaming market. the PS3 will come back and dominate (yes, even the Wii). People are haters right now because they think they can't afford it.

There's only one king in HDM and the gaming market has typically been profitable for 2 or even 3 platforms at a time. Maybe Sony didn't care if they came in at #1 for gaming this time, considering they know they'll still make plenty of money at #2, whereas with HDM it's #1 or bust.

Neither! They care about Microsoft.
Sony on the other hand cares more about the user experience, they are kind of like apple in that regard. They offer great TVs, movies, games, etc. They just want to give everything the HD experience. Last edited by cartier; 12-18-2007 at 09:32 PM. |

PS3 sales are rising, and the most highly anticipated games are yet to come. Developers are getting more used to the hardware and PS3-enhanced multiplatform games are going to be the norm soon enough. Are you the kind of jackass that calls the race after the first lap? Or a football game after the 1st quarter? How shortsighted can you be? every single one of your threads is anti-bluray or anti-sony. You are a troll |

The only thing that Sony hadn't accounted for on a gaming level was the massive lead the Xbox 360 built up in America the year before the PS3 came out. The market would look vastly different right now if those two systems had been released within 3 months of each other. The Wii is a gimmick that doesn't really sell to the hardcore gamer that both the Xbox 360 & the PS3 serve. The PS3 will catch up and eventually surpass the Xbox 360 worldwide but America might be lost for Sony this generation.
