Default Darn Good Forum Indeed!

Within the past 3 months I have "recruited" SEVEN co-workers into the world of Blu-Ray (5 PS3s and 1 Sony and 1 Sharp). I have told ALL 7 of them about this great forum. I am one of the unlucky ones to get a Samsung BD-1200 and I can't watch my Die Hard 4 movie yet, but I know if I check out this site I will get the word when the firmware is available. I will keep spreading the word about Blu-Rays and Blu-Ray.Com.

Just bought my dad a Sony Blu-Ray player for Xmas. He has a 42HDT50 (Hitachi) plasma display. The specs for the TV say 1080i with 1024 x 1024 resolution, but when we set the Player to 1080i format I notice WAY to much red in the darker areas. This does not occur when the player is set to 720 or even 1080p, for that matter. Any thoughts on how to correct this?? Should we just keep the player set at 720? The picture still seems much better than a standard DVD.

Thanks in advance, and hope this is the right forum. Merry Christmas

Not sure why your seeing red? Also, that resolution is wrong if I may say. That would produce a square picture. Not a 16:9 picture. Which your tv should be doing.

According to the owners manual - your TV can do 720p native I am assuming hard to tell from the manual and 1080i capable as well. You do not have any HDMI ports but do have a DVI port which needs to be used.

You should set your BD player to 1080i when using your tv. Per the instructions here ...

Quote:
• When using a DVI input from a Set-Top-Box, it is recommended to use a 1080i or 720p input signal.

I'm new here too, just thought that this is a great place to come to talk film. I have had a BD player since last Christmas and have had some problems with certain titles. I am a little disappointed in the fact that some of my films look so grainy and we are paying nearly thirty dollars a title.

Native resolution of this TV set does not match any standard video format pixel to pixel. So it's all resizing, upconversion, and downconversion. In your case.... choose the best looking one (on the DVI output) and stick with it. I think awhile ago I read review for this set on CNET discussing something about the colors... check it out.

I bought Full Metal Jacket, Goodfellas, Rocky (the original), Apocalypto, Oceans 13, and 300 only to be duped. I thought that they would have great resolution, but they are grainy and I don't know what to do? Taladega Nights, Superbad and Casino Royale look great. Is there a place to talk about the best looking films?

Wow that was fast DrinkMore! Thanks for the info. I've read a few posts on the forum about displays that claim to be 1080i and are actually no more than 720. Was concerned that this older model display fell into that category and that we should be using the lesser format.

And yes, 1024 x 1024 was a typo...little too much eggnogg perhaps, or maybe not enough.

The redness is very pronounced when the screen is black or the scene is dark but vanishes when I change the format to anything besides 1080i. Very weird...

That is strange. Maybe the color needs to be adjusted? I am unsure. It might have something to with the DVI.

I can say that 300 is supposed to be grainy. That is "the directors intent". There are a ton of threads about it. Might want to search. Also, depending on the version (there is a new remastered version out and I hear it is MUCH better than the original - I have only the new one so I don't know how bad the old one was), full metal jacket has SOME grain. Not the amount 300 does. As for the other ones, I can not help you there. I can't remember Apocalypto. I thought the picture was SUPERB when I was watching it.

1024 x 1024 is NOT a typo... That is this TV's native resolution. Looks like this plasma's intended purpose was to support all popular PC resolutions automatically, while 720P and 1080i were an afterthought: some of the auto settings will not work with these video formats.
