New 'X-Men' Movie Will Reportedly Start Shooting In 2017

By Kevin Jagernauth | The Playlist

There's going to be a lot of "X-Men: Apocalypse" chatter in the weeks ahead. The first trailer is set to debut in front of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," while Bryan Singer will continue to put the finishing touches on the picture with reshoots scheduled to take place over the winter. But could there be another "X-Men" movie already brewing?

According to a report in Journal de Montreal, the X-Men production team have booked production facilities in the city for November 2016 with plans to start shooting a new movie in 2017, for a possible release in summer 2018. The reports suggests Singer will be back to direct as well, but there's little other information about which cast members would return.

Nothing is official at the moment, and it should be noted that Singer has already announced his next project, an adaptation of "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea." That said, he could presumably shoot next year, with Singer jumping back to the world of X-Men in 2017.

Agreed. I guess Singer has decided his involvement with this franchise is not done after Apocalypse, and that he still has a story he wants to tell.

And honestly the more Singer is involved, the better. He has ROCKED the movies he's made. I want him to tell more stories.

Absolutely. Days of Future Past is probably my favorite film of the franchise so far. I'm beyond ecstatic to see what he's doing with Apocalypse.

Great news if true but I hope they leave Magneto completely out of the next film. I love Fassbender in the role but for f***'s sake, we don't need Mags in Every single film.

Hmm, well that's odd. Any chance this could be a new movie with the old cast, set in the new post-DoFP timeline? I'd line up for that.

Not me. Magneto is far and away one of the most interesting characters in all of superhero/supervillain history. I can't get enough of watching him on screen.

I also like the fact that the X-Men movies have a consistent power struggle with a constant threat instead of a brand new "villain of the week" like the Batman and Avengers movies have in every movie. (Although I suppose you could argue that Sebastian Shaw, Sentinels, William Stryker, and Apocalypse are all "new villains" in these X-Men movies)

My favorite comic movie series so far, so of course I am excited for more. Will be interesting to see where they go after Apocalypse, either jumping back to modern day with a recast or doing more period stuff.

FOX’s X-Men movies have a somewhat hit or miss history with iconic Marvel storylines. Sometimes they get them right, while other times they find themselves way off the mark. Luckily for the studio, the newly rebooted timeline offers chances for them to correct errors of the past – and it seems that’s exactly what they intend to do. New rumors seem to indicate that FOX will use Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey for an adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga following the events of X-Men: Apocalypse.

This rumor comes to us courtesy of Heroic Hollywood. During a recent episode of Scoop Drop, it came forth that FOX may in fact attempt to once again try The Dark Phoenix Saga, and that the events of Apocalypse will lead to that storyline. The episode also cites quotes from director Bryan Singer, who recently alluded to something dark and malicious growing inside of Sophie Turner’s young Jean Grey. It’s not much to go on, but if it’s true it will see one of the X-Men’s most iconic storylines brought to life on the silver screen.

The Dark Phoenix Saga has become iconic as one of the most infamous X-Men stories of all time, if not one of the most legendary arcs in all of comics. Centering on X-Men member Jean Grey, the storyline sees her possessed by a malevolent entity known as the Phoenix Force. The possession turns her against her former teammates and develops her into one of the most powerful enemies ever faced by Charles Xavier’s squad of mutants. FOX previously attempted the storyline all the way back in 2006 with the laughably bad X-Men: The Last Stand, but as most fans have generally reviled that film as hands down the weakest of the entire X-Men franchise, so it’s best left forgotten.

For the X-Men franchise to return to The Dark Phoenix Saga logically makes sense. Although the timeline reset with the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, it doesn’t change the fact that Jean Grey as a character always had something sinister inside of her. This provides an opportunity for FOX to once again broach the iconic storyline while making important deviations from what didn’t work in The Last Stand.

If FOX does indeed decide that they want to do The Dark Phoenix Saga again, then we are completely on board. However, we won’t know for sure if that’s the direction they will go with the story until X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27. Keep your fingers firmly crossed, Marvel fans; I know I certainly will.

I'm totally stoked for this if the rumored plot is true!

Ugh, not the right actress for such a beloved storyline, Famke Janssen can act better than Sophie Turner in her sleep.

I don't see them replacing him anytime soon, if Hugh Jackman's not involved then Wolverine won't be in the movie (at least not for many years).

Yeah, I think they'll go without Wolverine for many years and then recast him after a long gap. Marvel will do the same thing with Iron Man and others too I bet.
