What a great site with excellent information... I have a;
1.plasma with three HDMI (samsung 5084) 2 PS3 3.cable box that is also a HD-DVR 4. receiver with two/three hdmi (yet to be purchased Onkyo 605 or 705?) My dilemma is with connections. There are times when I just want to put on the cable box/HD-DVR and the tv and just listen to the audio through the tv without having to use the HT system and there are times I want to use the HT system. How can I achieve both goals without having to manually change the connections for each scenario? Thanks, mmortimer |

Personally, I would hook all components (PS3 and cable box) to your receiver via HDMI and run an HDMI from your receiver to your tv. Then if you wanted to just have the tv outputting the sound, you can mute the receiver and turn up the volume on the tv. Others may have better ideas but this is what first came to mind.

Thanks for the reply but I wanted to keep th receiver off if possible when I was just using the tv audio but you gave me something to think about.

Are you wanting to use the cable box and just listen to the tv audio? If that's the case, I would keep the HDMI hookups to the receiver, HDMI to the tv, then run component and an audio source to the tv. That way when the receiver is off, it will use the component and audio source so you won't need to have your receiver turned on at all. I haven't tried this with the PS3 so I don't know if you could do the same hookup as the cable box.

What I want is the best of both worlds which is to be able to listen to the cable shows and the HD-DVR recorded programs (cable box and HD-DVR all in one) thru the tv audio but when I choose be able to use the HDMI capabilities of my cable box/HD-DVR thru my HT speakers when I choose without having to do manual switching of cable set up each time.
I hope this makes sense... |

Since you mentioned you want to watch cable without the receiver being turned on, I would set the system up like this... Cable box with HDMI to Receiver with HDMI to TV, Cable box with component/(optical, coax, rca) audio cables to TV. You may need to jump the Source on the tv but that's all you would need to do. Maybe someone else has a better idea but that's what I would do if I wanted to bypass the receiver altogether.
