Default Onkyo 605 video upconversion question...

Is the upconversion all done through HDMI output?

its not necessarily an upconversion like what dvd players do...so to speak.

It takes an analog input signal (Component, Composite,S-Video) and outputs it through the HDMI cable at 720p.

No, the 605 can upconvert composite and S-Video signals to output through the Component Video Out. It can also upconvert composite, S-Video, and component signals to output through the HDMI Out.

Note that this is NOT the same as upscaling.

* EDIT * The 605 can do upscaling through HDMI through a "secret" menu, but you may not like the results.

We didn't have much luck using the 720p upconverting (we found it messed up the aspect ratio), but here's the trick to activate the secret menu:

1. Hold down the Aux button on the front panel of the receiver.

2. While holding down Aux, press Power.

3. The LED display should read "Resolution: Auto." Use the directional controls to the right of the display to change to 720p.

4. Press the Return button beneath the direction controls to get out of the secret menu.

Of course, if you decide you don't like the 720p upconversion, you can use the same sequence to turn it off.

Sorry, I was on the way out and I didn't have the link handy. Looks like someone else posted the steps to enable upscaling, though.
