Talking Justified

Anyone who's ever seen Deadwood has been itching to see actor Timothy Olyphant throw on some spurs and clean up a town again. As Sheriff Seth Bullock, Olyphant brought back images of classic Western characters who weren't afraid to saddle up and take on the bad guys.

After a great stint on FX's Damages—he's back to enforcing the law in the country, this time on FX's upcoming program Justified (formerly Lawman; thanks for the title change,Steven Seagal!). Olyphant, who I've admired since his role as a pill-dealing character in Go, stars as a modern-day Deputy Marshal called Raylan Givens, who only shoots to kill and uses old-timey justice to police a town in Kansas. FX has released a new extended trailer for the program, and from the looks of it, I'm on board. What can I say, I'm a fan of people getting shot. FX has ordered 13 episodes of the series
Trailer

'Justified' premieres Tuesday, March 16 at 10:00/9:00c

What Would Elmore Do?

That's what "Justified" creator and executive producer Graham Yost asks himself and his writing team everyday as they build on crime novelist Elmore Leonard's short story "Fire in the Hole" to create the new FX series starring Timothy Olyphant.

"Justified," premiering March 16 at 10, features Olyphant as one of Elmore's most popular characters, Raylan Givens, a deputy U.S. marshal who only shoots to kill. While "Fire in the Hole" was the guideline for the series pilot, it was on Yost's shoulders to extend Leonard's vision through the rest of the season.

"That was the thing that was most frightening. Could I hit that same tone?" Yost told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour Sunday. "I think we're doing a good job."

Leonard is credited as an executive producer on the series, but he says that's more of an honorary position.

"I'm game," Leonard said. "I'm ready to come up with anything they want."

Yost says the reasons for adapting "Fire in the Hole" as a series include the fact it's set in Kentucky, a location you don't see often on TV; Leonard's sense of character and humor; and the element of unexpected violence.

"I like the entertainment value of the show," said Yost. "I thought it would be a change of pace for FX a little bit in that, while it's a violent show, Raylan Givens is a hero. He's a good guy, and you like him, and you're rooting for him."

"I like the fact that [Raylan is] not a yeller," Yost added. "He just tells it like it is, and that's just the way it's going to be."

Olyphant, whom we last saw in FX's "Damages" and previously on HBO's "Deadwood," doesn't mind being typecast as the aggressive, brooding type, though he does think Raylan is a significant departure from Seth Bullock of "Deadwood."

"Both characters wear hats, but after that, they really start to become their own thing," Olyphant said. "I think that anyone who knows Elmore's work, there's a delicateness to it, and a tone to it, that's just so appealing to me. It's so fun."

Just another reason why I despise Steven Seagal. "Lawman" was a better title than "Justified" but I'm gonna watch and probably love this anyway.

Well I'm still a Seagal fan lol, but FX rarely ever strikes out, and there aren't any westerns on tv right now, so a marshall who actually draws his gun and kills is a nice change of pace, from "please don't make me pull my weapon, i don't want to sir, please put the child down, i don't want to have to use this" screw it, count down like Raylan and pull, lol. Not to mention some of the characters on this show have the craziest names, which i also find amusing, check this out:

Timothy Olyphant ... Raylen Givins
Doug E. Doug ... Israel Fandi
Jere Burns ... Wynn Duffy
Walton Goggins ... Boyd Crowder
Damon Herriman ... Dewey Crowe

Olyphant's always a good bet to put in a solid performance.

I saw a commercial for this last night while watching Nip/Tuck. I'm not really into westerns or anything but I like Timothy Olyphant so I'm gonna give it a try.

Olyphant was here first. Like I remember the first movie I remember seeing him in was Scream 2.

Nice! I would love to see this show with atleast 4.5 million right out of the gate, cause for FX that's a really solid number, and not to mention since Nip/Tuck is done, Rescue Me ends either this year or early next, Damages could possibly be canceled, and only Sons of Anarchy is really left for serious drama if those other are gone, they are really going to need something to help the network out. And I would absolutely love to have Sons and Justified throughout my year.

With the anemic ratings for Damages I'll be shocked if it lasts past this season. I love that show and it's one of my favorites, but it's doing horribly in the ratings.

I've never watched Damages before and I didn't know it was still on until it started up again. They don't do much advertising/promoting for it anymore, which ultimately means it's going to be cancelled sooner or later. The only drama show I ever watched on FX was Nip/Tuck but I missed so many seasons it wasn't a huge deal for me to watch. Nor was I sad it ended. Sons of Anarchy I bought on BD but haven't watched yet because I wanna wait until the second season comes out, or at least close to that time. But I think I might start it soon.

My only concern with Justified is that it could be a slow paced show.

You should watch Damages from the beginning. It's fantastic. Can be a bit slow paced though, so if that's not your thing, you may not like it.

One of the best dramas on TV right now, if not THE best.

Yeah I've tried to get into damages time and time again, but it just doesn't happen for me, I find myself very bored a lot. Sons of Anarchy season 2 won't be out until August, legally anyways. Once you watch season 1 you will immediately have to see season two, however for me as a fan from day 1, I had a 10 month wait, if you're Groo, you watch both seasons back to back lol, BASTARD! haha. Season 3 will start in September. Justified should have plenty of action to keep the show pacing after all the clips and scenes I've seen not to mention since I've read most of the books they based this one from Elmore Leonard. I have faith in Olyphant playing another bad ass sheriff, so this will keep my attention. Not to mention you obviously see a lot of explosions from Rocket fire throughout the previews too, and robberies, so I wouldn't worry too much.

During last night's SOA they aired a Season 2 promo which was just made up of footage from the first season, but it did say the show returns in February. So it's coming back earlier than I thought, didn't season 1 premiere in March of this year?

Yes, Justified premiered in March of this year. I'll take it a month earlier.

I guess that moves up your estimate for Season One's Blu-ray release to late January/early February.

I had assumed with Lights Out premiering in January that Justified would return as soon as this ended, but since this is back in February I guess that will give us Lights Out on Tuesdays, and Justified on Wednesdays.

I'm talking out here in Washington state, in the country, lol. He has some very different fan basis that's for sure.

But back on topic, that was a very solid second season for Justified. I look forward to what next year brings us. Also looks like Walt's movie career is in full swing, I didn't know or remember he was in Cowboys and Aliens!! I hope he has a substantial part.

Walton Goggins Joins Indie 'Officer Down'
Quote:
Walton Goggins, coming off the superb second season of FX's gritty drama Justified, has been set to star opposite Stephen Dorff and David Boreanaz in the Brian A. Miller-directed indie Officer Down. Once again, Goggins plays a dubious figure. Here, he's the prime suspect in the sexual assault of a young woman, a case being investigated by a gruff detective (Dorff). Goggins will be seen this summer in the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys & Aliens and also stars in Straw Dogs, the remake of the Sam Peckinpah revenge thriller that Screen Gems releases in September.
