Default Calibrate your TV without paying a professional?

Is there any way to calibrate your HD Plasma without paying a professional to do it?

If possible, I am actually looking to buy a Pioneer 6010 plasma and was hoping to get any insights on that regarding its calibration.

Not a true ISF Calibration. You have to at least buy the equipment to do it. That equipment is available on amazon. Also, if you do try to calibrate it yourself, don't **** it up.

Buy DVE: HD Basics, insert into player, and follow instructions.

Not a professional calibration. Those are picture adjustments.

But, failry effective for an end-user and no pesky "I destroyed my plasma by going into the service menu" side effects.

Sure it is effective for picture quality. But the biggest benefit of a professional calibration is the energy savings, especially on a 60 Pioneer.

TweakTV has recommended settings you could try ...

http://www.tweaktv.com/tweak-my-tv/c...dp-6010fd.html

Also,.. Digital Video Essentials is a great way to learn about calibration and you can start with the user adjustments (brightness, contrast, sharpness, hue, color temp, and so on.) And you may find you get a long way to a great looking image.

I've been all about DIY calibration. My CRT Front Projector has to be set up from scratch with everything (Optical Focus, Electrical Focus, Geometry, Convergence, Grey-Scale.) Using DVE and a color meter I calibrate to my ability. I would never consider having it done because doing it myself is part of what I like about Home Theater.

I'll let you know what my settings are after I calibrate my Panny tonight using DVE HD Basics, which I just received from Tower.com. I'm interested to see how they compare to the TweakMyTV settings.

I used DVE to adjust my LCD initially. I finally got around to getting a spectrometer (EYE-one), and after doing the initial measurements, they were close enough in my opinion that I did not feel it was worth the effort to fine tune them further. Usually, choosing the warmest color spectrum setting and appropriately adjusting brightness and contrast gets you most of the way toward where you want to go. I'd say 80-90% there. Only you can decide if paying a pro is worth the last 10-20%. For me it's not.
