Default Any news on THDs?

Since there has been nary a word lately about THDs, I was wondering if Warners is still planning to go ahead with them (and when), or if they are dragging their feet until it will no longer be necessary to produce them.

Thankfully, nothing definitive yet. I'm not sure when they'll be out, but part of Warner's announcement was likely to scare supporters on both sides into resolving the war sooner than later. They say everyone wants them, but no one really does (well, maybe a few crazy people).

Warner's CES press release simply said that THD is due out sometime in the second half of 2007 so we may have to wait a while to hear anything more.

Paramount doesn't seem enthusiastic: http://www.twice.com/article/CA6422671.html

I hope they never see the light of day. If I wanted to buy a bastard disc I'd just get a regular HD-DVD.

Well the only "news" I've heard was a Paramount person implying they were single layer so the space wouldn't be enough for them..

I can't conceive a Return of the King High Def 10 GB video file, why, that would be almost like a DVD!

(i just checked a screen capture png of Batman 13? Mb/s against it's NTSC DVD 8? Mb/s counterpart on that other place, and I'm thinking they are very similar. (mmm maybe the DVD capture was made with a Toshi ). The PAL DVD must barely be different!)

I'm going to call these monstrosities FRD's (Franken-ray Discs)
and I expect they'll be received like any other chimera, that is to say,
with torches .

Default Warner's Total HD to have crippled Blu-ray side?

From Home Media Magazine:

Quote:
Warner’s Total HD, a combined HD DVD and Blu-ray disc, will be ready for the market by June, said Dominick DallaVerde, senior director of HD operations, new technology and applications for Cinram. That will be a disc with a 15GB HD DVD on one side and a 25GB Blu-ray disc on the other. A higher capacity HD DVD 30GB/Blu-ray 25GB will be ready to ship by August, he said.
Firstly, any Total HD releases between June and August will be single-layer for both formats.

However, it is even more serious for Blu-ray owners: the Cinram exec gives no timeframe for the readiness of an HD DVD 30GB/Blu-ray 50GB, so going from that, all Total HD releases going forward would be single-layer Blu-ray.

A simple solution if it's a long movie don't buy it. I think it may effect HD-DVD just as badly. You may find that both formats are confined to 25GB. Logically it would make sense why they have no intention of making a 50GB disk. With these little monsters why would they encode the same move twice, once to fit 25GB (BD) then another for 30GB (HD-DVD)? Just like one for 50GB and another for 30GB. I doubt this will be a long term situation.

Warner this is unaceptable from your side ,i will and i will never buy a disc included HD-DVD.Blu-ray sales has been increasing and increasing since the day light of Panasonic player, then come PS3 which pushes the sales of Blu-ray far away and now with 50% on amazon and the release of casino Royale and many more good titles Blu-ray discs are in a stage of destructing HD-DVD for ever and finally you are saying that we have to buy THD this is totally unaccepted and refuse.Hopefully and my messages arrive to all blu-ray around the world dont buy a single title called THD because this is the only way to convince Warner that THD is totally a loosing format will never get a daylight.

I will be importing all my Warner discs from Japan (where they won't even try to release a TrueHD disc) or hopefully UK, if everything goes well.

This is why Paramount have said they will not support the TotalHD format.

Well if they do only one encode, as they have been doing all this time, does this mean we will have movies on TotalHditian Blu-rays be 10 GB sized when Blu-ray Discs are 50GB now?

That's like puting a a DVD on a BD

or a CD on a DVD

Meeeeez!

From Worst to Horrible

THD

Totally Horrid Disc

Default price? and other rambling thoughts

how much will these little monsters cost? I can't imagine it would be cheaper than a disc with one format on it. I don'th think to many consumers are willing to pay more than the current price for BD or hd-dvd. I only buy them when they're on sale as it is (except casino royale). plus who wants to buy a disc that's half completely useless to them? if you have 1 player format then one side is redundant, if you have a dual format player or both formats, then why not just buy hd-dvd or blu-ray version since you can only play 1 at a time.

maybe netflix, blockbuster, hollywood video, and other rental places would like it. because they could just buy that in bulk as opposed to both formats individually.

Angry Warner is screwing the consumer, AGAIN!

First off, I refuse to buy this monstrosity THD format. Why pay more money and get less?

Recently, I've been selling off my DVD collection and getting ready for Blu-ray titles to replace my favorites when they come out.

As I weed through my collection, I'm reminded of all the ones that I really had gripes about in terms of the DVD version. Most of them are Warner titles!

  • Most flippers (dual-sided discs) were from Warner
  • Very few (if any) Warner titles had DTS soundtracks
  • And worst of all, Warner had that horrible cardboard case called the "snapper"

Maybe if enough of us refuse to buy these, Warner will get the message.

Jim L: Spot on with that list of Warner DVD gripes.
God, I hate those snapper cases.

Warner needs to stop this crime against humanity; I won't touch their FRD's
(Franken-ray Discs). If you were to sew a corpse to your back it would be
equivalent to what they're doing. Sure, you could ignore that it's there, but
that's not going to stop it from stinking.
