Default onboard decoding

I know this is probaly answered somewhere, but if you have a Blu Ray player with onboard decoding of all audio formats, and a receiver that with all the latest audio formats, is it better to have blu ray player do it or the receiver??

Depends upon the player and the reciever.

Can the player bitstream those audio formats to the receiver?
How are you sending the audio to the player, analog or hdmi?
Which has better DAC's the player or the receiver?

IMHO, I would say if your player is capable, to bitstream the audio over hdmi to the receiver.

I hope this isn't a stupid question.... but would the DAC's on the player even come into play when you are using digital output?

no. The receiver DAC's will be used. The player DAC's are only used if decoded in the player and sent out over the player's analog connections.

The Marantz sounds sweet using 7.1 analog from a Marantz through a Marantz

OK, so I have a question. I have the Panasonic BD30, which does not decode internally. I was reading about bitstream vs. PCM, and for the fun of it, I switched the settings on my player from bitstream to PCM output via HDMI. Now a BD movie that used to display as Dolby True-HD on my TX-SR605 receiver now shows as Multichannel. I am still hearing everything, but am I getting Dolby True-HD?

It just means your player is converting the trueHD to PCM and sending that digitally to the reciever. All of us that use the PS3 for our player have this as our only option. It shouldn't make a difference to the sound though, assuming the decoder algorithm in your player is as good (or better) than the one in the receiver.

No.

The BD30 is decoding the Lossy core...equivalent to the dolby 5.1 found on standard dvd.

How much quality difference is between Dolby True HD and lossy core Dolby Digital 5.1? day and night? I mean can a normal person not a professional tell the difference?

Thanks

There is a significant difference between the two codecs. Can you hear the difference? It depends on your equipment, room acoustics, and your hearing. Most people above the age of 30 have a significant loss of hearing. We are not bats and dogs.

Many people are more than satisfied with Dolby Digital. If money is a problem, don't worry and enjoy your system. Many years ago when I was in college, I used to enjoy movies on a black & white 11'' TV. My friends were jealous. Everything is relative.

If you want to hear any of the interactive sounds, the decoding must be done in the player.

Also, the "better" your speakers are, the more of a difference the HD codec's will make IMO. If you have an HTIB, sure you'll hear a difference, but compare a lossy codec on say a B&W speaker vs a lossless codec, than people will claim night and day differences. Honestly, the jump from higher bitrates on the legacy codecs on Blu-ray from DVD is bigger than Blu-ray lossy codecs to lossless codecs. But that's just me, and if you look at my sig, I only have Bose so I can't say much but thats what I hear.
