Default My job is complete! The wife is onboard Blu...

PS3 owner since Christmas 2006 - own about 40+ Blu-Rays and rent often from Netflix. My wife wasn't really onboard - was wondering what the big difference is (she isn't a movie fanatic like myself).

So we head over to my parents for Christmas and rent Ocean's 13 on DVD to screen on my parents new HDTV (like an idiot, I forget to bring my PS3 with me). We're not 10 minutes into the movie when my wife says "Why does this look so bad? It's really fuzzy - awful really. Is that because we've been watching Blu-Ray?"

Yes! All future purchases are now more easily justified...

I've found this the case with a few friends too, they didn't notice much difference going from DVD to Blu-ray, but they sure noticed the difference going from Blu-ray back to DVD.

Congrats man, that is one DIFFICULT task indeed!

I'm still trying to convince my GF that Blu-ray is REALLY better. She is wishy-washy on it... like, "Well, yeah, I can see the difference". But like it is no big deal.

Congrats!

My brother was sort of a 'non believer' as well, and thought upscaled DVD would do the job just fine. He was planning on holding out on buying a high-definition video player and sticking with his DVD player for a year or two.

Well, I made the decision for him ... by buying him a PS3

When dealing with a wife or any other family member that says "What a waste of money; i don't see the difference...", it sometimes resorts to a strategy such as this one.

Funny you mention this.

My wife and I were watching some Blu-rays that were very clear. This repeated itself for several weeks.

Then we put in Mrs. Doubtfire on DVD. I know that many of the newer DVDs upscale fairly well. But Mrs. Doubtfire does not.

My wife tried not to comment on how bad it looked since she figured I'd go out and buy the Blu-ray version. But it was written all over her face. Anyways I didn't rush out and buy the Blu-ray version, so she is happy with my restraint. However as you all know that is because there is no Blu-ray version yet. I didn't tell her that part.

+1 The only way, except this didn't work with my wife. She's already blind as a bat so she uses that as excuse for not being easily sold that blu-ray is the way to go, however the first time she saw CARS she said and I quote, "OK, now I see the difference"!

My wife has gotten to the point where she wants me to double dip and get the BD version of Cars. Haven't done it yet but this does "authorize" all future purchases.

If you have money for that than you have money to bribe her. The bribe would be worth every viewing second.

I love stories like that....same here with my wife, when I settled for a DVD copy of Transformers (because there was no way in hell I would buy an HDDVD player) she was like "why does the picture suck so bad..."

Even I, the nitt-picky guy that I am, I still thought an upconverted SD-DVD of Transformers on my PS3 looked decent, but she immediately objected and told me that DVDs are terrible, upconverting or not.

She knows everything about the format war (thanks to me), she was even the one who woke me up last Friday from my afternoon nap when she saw the quick local news report about Warner on TV....she woke me up saying "baby its over, its over....Warner went Blu"

how many wives are that cool? I waited and waited everyday for the past 3 months obsessively refreshing HDM websites hoping for a "Warner Gone Blu" news, and the one day I decide to take a break from HDM forums and have a nice little afternoon nap, I get the good news delivered by my wonderful wife

Needless to say, I immediately woke up, asked her to pinch me as I tivo-ed that news tidbit and played it over and over while doing my monkey dance!

P.S: Two nights ago she formally requested that I buy Shakira's new Oral Fixation concert on BD

My girlfriend will NOT buy DVDs anymore. I'm glad she noticed the difference from the get-go...

That's the 150", the 103" is the pathethically tiny thing to the left.

Enquiring minds want to know:

It's price.
The price of the small generating station required to power it.

Nice job! My wifey has been supporting me ever since she saw Casino Royale.

Let me tell you, this hobby is a lot easier once you got the wifeys approval.
Now she comes home with Blu-rays!

I think the easiest way to convince everyone why they should go HD is by comparing back to back the difference. Switching between a DVD player and a BD player can be tricky, since they think you're tricking them.

I recently found Easter Eggs on Ratatouille. One of them was on how to pronounce ratatouille, which was in SD. It has a shot of the producer at the beginning and it is a fairly short extra. There is also an extra interviewing Brad Bird and Thomas Keller shot in a variety of formats but the main interviews are in HD. This also has the shot of the producer at the beginning, and it's the same interview shoot in both extras.

Playing the SD extra first and then playing the HD extra really convinces people of the differences. And the food and food ingredients in HD makes your mouth water real fast!

My wife (who pushed us into HDTV) and have put 12 friends (6 couples) into debt after they watching some football games at our house last month... After showing them Casino Royale on Blu-Ray, they're all going BLU

Converting my wife to BD wasn't as much of a struggle as i thought it would be, although i think getting her to agree to another BD player and HD TV purchase (for the bedroom) will take a lot of work, especially now that we have a baby on the way.

She actually took the plunge and bought me the PS3 for my birthday in August - it was at that point that the HDTV/Blu-Ray talks started, but she told me she wanted to wait until early 2008.

Well, one day in late September, when we were in Target, they had the Sony BD player setup with a 1080p TV, and it caught her eye. She said, "look how clear the picture is with Cars on that TV - that is way clearer than it is on our TV"...i jumped in, "well dear, as well as this being on a 1080p TV, this is the Blu-Ray version"...as she pondered the purchase, i reminded her that the PS3 played BD and we would not need a BD player, just the TV.

We walked out the store that day with a 40" Philips 1080p, Cars, Ratatouille and Black Hawk Down on BD...

We now have around 30 odd Blu-Rays and counting, and the Netflix queue is full of BD titles.
