Default I think I'm missing the boat on Decoding. Please help!

I have a old school OnkyoTX-SR504 and a Panny BD30 player (firmware not yet updated). Do either of these products do Hd decoding and if not do I need it?

According to amazon the Panasonic DMP-BD30K does HD decoding..Not sure if the 504 can handle the HD Audio coming from the Player since it doesn't have HDMI...but im not sure one of the vets please confirm....And the answer to your 2nd question is YES we all need HD Audio...Its a Necessity

According to the site here, the BD-30 bitstreams the HD audio, but does not decode. Which is a bummer, as it does have the 5.1 analog outs.

So here's the situation, you can upgrade either the receiver or the player. Upgrading the receiver would mean looking for one that is HDMI 1.3a compatible, but NOT passthrough. The new Onkyo's out are all capable of this, and since you seem to like the brand, that's one way to go.

The other option is to upgrade the player. The options here are, currently, the Sony BDP-S550 or the Panasonic DMP-BD55. Either one of these will allow you to use the 5.1 analog inputs and have the player doing the decoding. Thus allowing you to enjoy HD audio in all it's glory.

Amazon can really throw off consumers with its technical specs when it says "Dolby True HD Decoder, DTS/DTS-HD High Resolution/Master Audio Decoder"...Because thats what it says for the BD-30

Why don't you go for the Onkyo 805?

I'll take a look at that is in $500 price range. My girlfriend is grilling me about spending money on a new receiver when I already have one. I need to get my balls back I know lol

I'd probably update the receiver, too. Driver King is right though. You should look into the Onkyo 805 for your price range. It pretty much does everything you would need it to for Blu-ray.
