Default Stand Alone BD player if PS3 owner already?

Are there any advantages to owning a stand-alone BD player if i already own the PS3. Is Audio Quality better from a SA BD Player or is my PS3 good enough? What about Picture Quality?

I have both a PS3 and a Panny BD35.

I think the PQ is about the same on both of them. However, I hear a definate AQ difference between the PS3 sending LPCM to my Denon 3808 receiver and the bitsream from the Panny BD35 to my receiver.

I think my receiver does a better job at processing the HD codecs than the PS3 does. I hear more detail in the scenes and better dialog coming from the center channel.

Other than the audio, I see no reason to go for a stand-alone if you already own a PS3.

If you are looking at buying new, I would only suggest a PS3 if you are also interested in gaming. Stand-alones have come down in price so much that it makes more sense now to buy one if you do not game.

Hope that helps.

bitstreamed audio ( which i find to sound better ) .. or maybe just the decoding done by my a/v vs. the ps3.

IR remote, so you can use Universal remote ( without the bluwave ir usb dongle)

Receiver reads " DTS-MSTR " instead of pcm multichannel "

I have a ps3 and bd35. Sending audio through bitstream from my bd35 does sound better then lpcm from the ps3. So now all my movies are handled by the bd35. Load times are also not an issue anymore. One benefit in going this route is that it relieves some stress on the ps3 if anything.

If you change to get bitstream audio ... make sure your AVR can take bitstream audio of the formats you want.

I bought a lower end AVR because it was able to accept LPCM via HDMI and the PS3 will decode every audio format and send it as LPCM. If I went stand alone I would likely lose DTS-MA for example.

The stand alone players sometimes use 1/3 the energy of a PS3 which is a big factor if you're somewhat green like me.

I'm one of those that couldn't care less if my AVR says DTS MA instead of Direct. The AVR in the the equipment rack outside the theater so I aint looking at it,... I'm watching movies instead. In fact in direct pure mode the LED display is turned off completely so that it's circuits don't interfere with the processing of the audio.

I have the launch 60GB PS3 model and I heard that the cell processor is the older version that is less efficient and noisier than the newer version found in newer PS3's. I also heard that after 2007, the 80GB model PS3's lack SACD and backwards compatibility completely. Is that true? If so, I may be in the market for a 2007 80GB PS3. If anyone is willing to answer my somewhat off-topic question, then great.

Yes, mine is the same one you got...and it gets pretty noisy at times. Especially when the temperature rises. Mine also does play SACD, however it seems that technology is rarely produced or sold. I went to my local record store to look for a SACD and all they had was a Beatles record with that format (nothing against the Beatles but i wanted to hear something that would put my system to the test)

Yeah the new 80gb lost sacd and backward compatibility the sd card reader and 2 usb ports. If you are lucky and can find a metal gear 80gb bundle that was the end of the classic 80gig and if you don't already have it you get one of the greatest games ever made Also as a technical point the classic 80gb does ps2 through emulation so its only like 90% compatible with ps2 games where the 60 is 100% because of having ps2 hardware.
